An ideal article would be a symbiotic combination of theory and experiment. Also very welcome are papers that provide documentation of a purely theoretical advance together with a clear exposition of how this advance furthers biological understanding. To allow for editing, everything must be double spaced, with wide margins all around and three or four blank lines above and below equations. The format should conform exact/y with the way papers are printed in the Bulletin. Those who are not fluent in English should enlist the help of an expert so that manuscripts are written clearly and idiomatically. Authors are urged to supply email and fax addresses for publication, in addition to a conventional address. The following instructions are an attempt to improve communication between theoretical and experimental biologists. (a) Every abstract should include a brief statement giving the biological significance of the paper. (b) An introduction should state the background of the problem in general terms, without equations. If the paper is particularly theoretical there could be two introductions. A section headed ‘‘Introduction: general’’ would have the format just described. In addition, there could be an ‘“‘Introduction: theoretical’’ to explain the theoretical background in a fuller form than that sketched in the biological introduction. (c) There should be a summary and conclusions section, which summarizes in general terms the results of the research described in the paper. Generally this should be done without equations and with explanatory figures and graphs. If the paper is particularly theoretical, the final section could be split into two, in a manner analogous to the introduction. All pages should be numbered consecutively. Any possible ambiguities should be resolved—e.g. clear distinction should be made between the numerals ‘‘zero’’ and ‘‘one’’ and the letters ‘‘oh’’ and ‘‘ell’’, and between characters on the line and superscripts and subscripts. Check carefully that all text citations appear in the list of references. Add your computer address if you actively use e-mail. Diagrams and figures should appear at the end of the text. Photographs should be high quality, glossy prints. Colour is permissible but the extra cost of printing in colour will be charged to the author. Drawings should be prepared in a professional manner on white paper or tracing cloth (glossy photographs of original drawings are acceptable). They should be drawn approximately twice the scale of the finished reproduction. Lettering should be made by means of a lettering guide. If desired by the author, drawings may be made at the Editorial Office, according to the author’s instructions, at cost. Separate sheets listing all figures and table captions should be attached at the end of the paper. Footnotes should be kept to a bare minimum, in number and length. To reduce publication times, authors are encouraged to submit manuscripts on computer diskette. TpX, AMS-TpX and LA-TpX are the preferred systems but the publishers will endeavour to use any diskette provided. Authors should provide the name of the computer and software package used and must always provide a hard copy of the manuscript. \t is particularly important that manuscripts comply as closely as possible with Bulletin style. The decision on the use of the diskette will be at the discretion of the publishers. In particular, in the present state of technology, articles containing many complicated formulae are more economically and rapidly set by hand. In general, authors should not submit diskettes until the final version of their manuscript is accepted for publication. The original manuscript and diagrams will be discarded one month after publication unless the publisher is requested to return original material to the author. Submission by electronic mail is welcomed. Figures might be sent by facsimile. Such a submission will suffice for referees, but the original manuscript and figures should be sent by ordinary mail. Authors who wish to avail themselves of this method of submission are advised to test the approach in advance by communicating with the Editor.
