FOREWORD This Bulgarian-English English-Bulgarian Dictionary is addressed to business people, travelers and students. It contains over 8,000 entries in Bulgarian and English. The use of this Dictionary is facilitated by the adoption of a simple transliteration scheme. Each word is supplied by a transliteration in the alpha- bet of the other language. This, naturally, entails a degree of imprecision, particularly in differenti- ating the pronunciation of sounds unique to the English language, such as open, short or long "o." Only one graphic symbol is employed. In the English-Bulgarian Dictionary, a hyphen following the letter "a" is used to denote the sound (a) in words such as "sad" and "cat." In the Bul- garian-English Dictionary, the hyphen is used to divide two letters indicating that they are to be pronounced separately, rather than as one sound. Such is the case with the combination of the letters "7" and “h," which, if divided by a hyphen, should be pronounced as in "zero" and “hotel.” If used in combination without a dividing mark, they sould be pronounced as the sound "zh" in the English word "measure." Duplication of characters is used to denote long vowels in English or separate рго- nunciation of the two identical sounds in Bulgarian.
