BUILDING WITH EARTH THE NUBLAN ARCH AND THE PARABOLA HOUSE ‘The lack of timber and ‘wood products has beco- me a serious threat to ‘boll local and glebal sus- vival in many parts of the world DIB recommends "The Nubian Arch’, lustrated here from a Danida financed pilotprojact in Ladakh, Northern Incia, in 1986, as an effective step towards combatting this devetoorrent. The Nubian Arch has its ori- gin in ancient ogypt, where it can be traced back 6000 years, ‘The construction is carefully described by Hassan Fethy, tho Egyptian architect, in his book "Architecture for (he Poor”, Weal cn Some of Fathy’s applicators of this construction is raprodu- ced here [rom Une book. ‘The Nubian Arch is a parebole-shaped selfhearing constrvetion of sunna- wed earth blocks, Which makes it possible with the help of simple bricklaying technique to erect a complete norehouse with walls and root exclusively using ¢u:Lh materials. PARBOLAHOUSES We call houses built with the Nubian arch as the roofconatruction "Par bola houses”. A very simple parabolahouse can principally be built eulirely without capi- tal. A solution which may be particularly relevant in a relief situation. A more sophisticated type could be an extension of one ot these reliet houses. For example as illustrated here with. an insulated coof, wooden doors and windows, dampcourse and foundation.
