Graduate Work at Bryn Mawr
Vjraduate students atBrynMawraremembers ofasmall
scholarlycommimityinwhichtheyworkas apprentices and
juniorscholarsinclose cooperationwithfaculty. Inmost
departments, programs are designedforeachgraduate
studentaccordingtoindividualinterests, preparation, and
experience, andastudent'sprogrammaywell cross depart-
mental lines. Theworkis organizedintheform ofseminars,
graduate courses, andindividual supervisedstudy.
Foundedin 1885, theBrynMawrGraduate Schoolwas the
firstgraduate schoolforwomenintheUnitedStates. Since
1931 bothmenandwomenhavebeenadmitted. In 1970 the
Graduate SchoolofArts and Sciences andthe Graduate
SchoolofSocialWork and Social Researchwere organizedas
two distinct schools. Today, the total studentenrollmentin
the Graduate SchoolofArts andSciencesis approximately
twohundredandthirty.
