U58b1 BRYAN GRIMES CAMP No. 424 THE LIBRARY OF THE UNIVERSITY OF NORTH CAROLINA AT CHAPEL HILL THE COLLECTION OF NORTH CAROLINIANA I'KESENTEl) liY Robert G. Anthony, Jr. Cp369.17 U58bl BRYAN GRIMES CAMP No. 424 Transcribed by Sybble Smithwick Route 1, Box 825 Belhaven, NC 27810-9607 1993 " FOREWARD The period of strife in United States history from 1861 to 1865 is one known by many names. The Civil War, War Between The States, War for Southern Independence and War of the Rebellion are just a few of the phrases used to describe this conflict. It was a peripd that left the South in ruins an—d defeat. Nonetheless, the spirit of the veterans of this conflict and of the white southern — populate was certainly not one of defeat. These veterans were proud of their involvements in this war and felt they had sought to protect the honor of their homeland. Destitute and economically depressed, they sought to find some source of pride in their lives. We do not know exactly when the first confederate veteran groups were formed, but herein existed a ready source of camaraderie and pride. The following entry appeared in THE WASHINGTON PROGRESS of Washing—ton, N. C. in the Tuesday May 12, 1896 issue: " Beaufort County claims the first organized body of ex- Confederate soldiers convened after the surrender. Majors Thomas Sparrow, W, A. Blount, and Capt. A. C. Latham, and other ex-Confederate soldiers, amounting in round number to 26, formed the first organized Association of ex-Confederate soldiers after the surrender, date of meeting given to any body of ex-Confederate veterans challenging the above assertion. We do not know to which body of veterans this article alluded, but we can assume that confederate veteran camps had been in existence for a period of time prior to this 1896 entry. This book of minutes of the Bryan Grimes Camp of Confederate Veterans came into the possession of The Beaufort County Genealogical Society through the efforts of Mr. Leslie F. House who had acquired some of the papers of the late Junius Grimes from his widow. These minutes appear within a cloth bound ledger. It is rather surprising that this volume was left behind with papers deemed of little value by officials of the N. C. Department of Archives and History as well as representatives of the Manuscript and Archives Department of Joyner Library at East Carolina University in Greenville. At any rate, BCGS was elated to receive custody of this historical volume. Sybble M. Smithwick decided to tr—anscribe these minutes and she has done her usual outstanding job especially when the faint penciled entries and difficult handwritings are considered. At the urging of Bob Grimes, a descendant of General Bryan Grimes, the procrastination has ended and this foreword has been pieced together. Though it .s unlikely that this transcript will .see publication in the near future, copies will be made and placed in the local libraries. Hopefully this work will facilitate accessibility of these records while preserving an important aspect of Beaufort County's history. John H.
