Without food you can survive for several weeks; without water you can survive for three days; but without breathing you can survive only a few minutes. Nevertheless, when it comes to personal health, people tend to focus on nutrition and exercise while learning how to breathe more effectively receives little attention. Breathing is necessary for energy production, which takes place in the cells of your body. Breathing also helps with functions that you may not think about. For example, breathing is necessary for speech production and for modulating abdominal pressure, which is important for move- ment and stability of the body and essential during birthing. When you do not breathe well, your health is compromised. People take about 20,000 breaths a day. Therefore, improving your breathing brings noticeable benefits to every aspect of your daily life. Generally better breathing makes your life more comfortable. It makes you more alert and energetic, and it improves exercise and sport per- formance. Understanding Healthy Breathing Humans are naturally built for healthy breathing. The body evolved to breathe well before people created exercise systems for it. Therefore, all breathing cues are opinions on how to breathe well; they can help or they can hinder breathing performance. To cue breathing effectively, you must truly understand these cues rather than adopt them without scrutiny. The ideas and exercises in this book are tried and tested over 30 years of teaching. A diverse population has used them, including dancers, yoga practitioners, Pilates instructors, actors, vocal coaches, physical thera- pists, athletes, horseback riders, tai chi practitioners, and midwives. In order to improve your breathing or coach someone who needs to improve, you need a solid understanding of anatomy, starting with the functional anatomy of breathing. Healthy breathing is flexible and adaptive and can provide the human organism with sufficient energy under constantly changing conditions. Imagine running to catch a bus. Your breathing has very little time to iv Introduction • v adapt while your metabolism ramps up rapidly. If all the muscles and joints involved in breathing are sufficiently flexible and responsive, it is no problem. However, if you are stressed, tense, have bad posture, do not move enough, have a breathing disorder, or received instruction that impedes your breathing, it can be a challenge. To improve breathing, you must first recognize and then remove the habits that hinder efficient breathing. To begin, explore the following behaviors that can make breathing less effective. They are best performed in a standing position. ■■ Tension: Notice your breathing. Proceed to clench your fists and curl your toes. Notice how your breathing becomes shallow. As soon as you relax, your breathing becomes easier. Grip your shoulders, and notice the effect on your breathing. Your goal is to reduce tension in your body that is impeding your breathing. ■■ Poor Posture: Notice your breathing. Slouch your shoulders, and notice how this posture affects your breathing. Shift your pelvis forward, and lean back with your upper body. Notice that it is harder to breathe under these circumstances. Good breathing requires good posture. ■■ Negative Thinking: Notice your breathing. Think, “I feel stressed!” Notice how your breath responds. Think, “I feel calm and relaxed.” Notice how your breath responds to these contrasting messages. You are going to learn to use your thinking to support good breathing. The Evolution of Breathing The first water-living animals breathed through their skin. This method worked fine if they were small enough and plenty of flowing water was available. Some early animals that lived in fresh water started to move around a lot, so breathing through the skin was not sufficient. Multiple folded flaps (gills) developed to increase the surface area for absorption of oxygen. These gills were enhanced by primitive expansions of the pharynx (the part of the throat behind the nose and mouth) into early lungs. However, gills are not suited for breathing in air, and primitive air-breathing animals such as frogs had to rely on swallowing movements to gulp in air (figure I.1). The breakthrough came with the advent of negative-pressure breath- ing, called thoracic breathing. The ribs attached themselves to the ster- num in front, creating an expandable rib cage. This adaptation allowed the ribs to rotate and swivel toward the head for inhalation and reverse this action for exhalation. This movement, which is like lifting a bucket handle, increased the side-to-side diameter of the rib cage, creating a vacuum in the lungs and causing the air to rush in. vi • Introduction Figure I.1 Primitive air-breathing animals had to rely on swallowing movements to breathe in air . This evolution was a great improvement over gulping air, but it came at a price. The negative pressure in the thorax not only appeared to suck in air, it also pulled the belly organs upward, and much of the space that could have been used for breathing was occupied. Primitive reptiles solved the problem by stretching a sheet of connective tissue across the bottom of the rib cage, pre- venting the organs from moving upward. This sheet still exists as the modern central tendon of the dia- phragm (figure I.2). Mammals, who were warm blooded, needed a higher oxygen intake. Their breathing had to become more effective at drawing oxygen into the lungs with the purpose of increasing their metabo- lism. Having warm blood was an advantage. Introduction • vii heat the body until the muscles could start functioning; the body could warm itself even in a cold environment. Muscles were attached to the rim of the central tendon and stretched down to the lower edge of the thorax, creating a muscular dome with a tendinous roof. This diaphragm could now move downward and flatten out, allowing for a large downward expansion in the lungs and greatly increasing the capacity to absorb oxygen. In fact, resting mammals can breathe with minimal movement of the ribs. As you are reading this book—unless you are run- ning on a treadmill—you will probably not notice much move- ment of the rib cage. This kind of breathing, called abdominal breathing, probably explains why mammals lack ribs below the 12th thoracic vertebra. As you inhale, the organs below the dia- phragm are pushed downward by the descending diaphragm. The abdominal wall moves outward to accommodate their movement, something that would not be pos- sible with a bony wall of ribs (see figure I.3). Figure I.3 The diaphragm, lateral view . How to Use This Book This book focuses on improving breathing function to benefit your health and improve your performance in the chores of daily life and during exer- cise. You will learn the anatomy of breathing and practice 35 exercises. The exercises are a combination of movement, imagery, and self-touch to create the maximum positive impact on your breathing. The book begins by teaching you about the vital muscle of breathing: the diaphragm. Next, you will learn about the interaction of the dia- phragm and the abdominal and other muscles associated with breath- ing, such as the scalenes. You will learn and experience the movement of the rib cage as it pertains to breathing. Finally, you will integrate all the elements involved in breathing, including the lungs and inner organs for optimal breathing function. Performing the exercises in this book will leave you feeling more energetic and focused, yet relaxed. You viii • Introduction will also gain an understanding of how to integrate imagery into your breathing practice. After you have read the book, choose two or three of the exercises that felt most beneficial to you and practice them for a few minutes every day. A recommended daily practice is also presented at the end of this book. Now it’s time to explore, exercise, and embody the physical apparatus involved in the act of breathing. 1 DIAPHRAGM The diaphragm is a muscular dome that extends along the bottom of the rib cage. In doing so, it separates the thoracic from the abdominal cavity. It is shaped like a boomerang with a flat tendon at its center (figure 1.1). The diaphragm is unique among muscles in that it is under both voluntary and automatic control. You do not have to consciously ini- tiate each breath; this task would be laborious and even dangerous since you could forget to do it. The only other muscles that function similarly are the scalenes, which keep the first two ribs from dropping downward during inhalation. Anteriorly the muscle fibers of the diaphragm insert into the bottom of the sternum at a point called the xyphoid process. Later- ally the diaphragm inserts into the inner margins of the lowest six ribs. Posteriorly the diaphragm connects to the bodies of L1 and L2 (L = lumbar vertebra). This con- nection is provided by verti- cally lying muscles called the right and left crura (plural of crus, which is Latin for “shin” or “leg;” named for their leglike shape).
