January 13, 2001 Hello, Monty: I finally got the information together that I think you are interested in. I inserted the information you had that I didn’t, before putting this together. I do not use a genealogy program for my work. I use WORDPERFECT 6.1 for all my work. My computer is an older model and I do not even have Internet on it. I haven’t worked with my Anderson family very much for quite a few years. I have been co-working with a young man from Moncton on his family history and we just had it printed this summer. This was the ESTABROOKS family and when we finished it was close to 1,200 pages. We ended up having to put the book into two volumes because there were so many pages. This was a huge undertaking that took us ten years to finish. Anyway, my ANDERSON genealogy consists of six brothers who settled in our area. I have not been able to locate the parentage of these six brothers nor have not been able to find any sisters. Your lineage comes from the oldest brother, William, which is complete as far as I have worked on it at this time. My lineage comes down from John Anderson, the brother of William. So I guess you can say we are related but it is very, very distant. I am giving you the entire WILLIAM ANDERSON genealogy. Your family is in it twice; (1) through the Bessie Spence lineage on page 6; and (2) through the Alfred T. Spence lineage on page 96. I hope you get a lot of new information out of this material. I certainly am very glad to help you out. The only payment I want from this is that you sent me any other information that I don’t have on the families you are working on. OK? I am going to save this on my disk as DOCUMENT.doc. I understand that anyone can read it when it is saved this way. If you have problems with it, let me know and I’ll probably have to send a hard copy through the mail. OK? Oh, yes. In going through the information you sent me I noticed that under JAMES KINLEY SPENCE you have his death date as Oct. 24, 1960. This is wrong. This is his wife’s death date. You will find James’ death date in my information. Take care and enjoy. By 1809 they had taken up land in the Shemogue area of NB in a district which became known as Anderson Settlement. William's land lay on the west side of Little Shemogue Harbour. When William brought his wife, Betty, to their log cabin in Shemogue, there were no roads, scarcely even a bridle path through the forest. Waterways and the sand beach along the Northumberland Strait were the main highways. Like other pioneers, they had to struggle hard in order to build a productive livelihood. The soil was fertile and nature produced good crops of wheat, oats, buckwheat and potatoes as soon as the land was cleared. In order to convert his grain into flour, William carried the bags by horseback to the nearest gristmill. A well-organized homestead was practically self-sufficient. The cattle provided food, leather for shoes and harness, and tallow for candles. The ox team took the place of the present- day tractors. The shearing of the sheep and the washing, carding, spinning and dyeing of the wool had to be done before Betty could start to weave the homespun yarn she would fashion into warm, practical garments for the whole family. The first sermon preached in that part of the country was delivered in a barn owned by one of the Anderson brothers. William was among the first to be elected to the eldership of the Presbyterian church in Shemogue at the time of the organization in 1830. His son, Stephen, later became an elder of the same church. Janet Hall in Scotland. The vessel which brought them to Richibucto, NB took eleven weeks to cross the Atlantic Ocean. An article in the SACKVILLE POST on Sept. 25, 1941, during the dark days of WWII, reads thus: One often reads of what women of Great Britain are doing these days, but seldom of what our own women are doing. The other day I was told of a woman living in Little Shemogue who this summer actually pitched on 40 loads of hay. She looks after the farm herself, and a pretty good farm it is. She occasionally has some help, but this year she has been doing most of the work herself, as farm help has been hard to get. This somewhat remarkable woman is MISS FANNY BLACKLOCK and her post office address is Little Shemogue. To show that farming is not all sunshine I was informed that last year Miss Blacklock raised 100 bushels of choice wheat, but the nearest mill was over in PEI and the freights were so high she could not afford to send it over there to be ground, and was finally obliged to sell it for $1.00 a bushel for seed. 5 DAVID ARTHUR BLACKLOCK, b.
