As an example, the Treasurer's record book for the period 1930-1953 has been lost. To this end, all the old record books were assembled and copied resu1ting in some 2,000 pages (on one side on1y). We hope to conclude this project in 19^95—or 1936-. 2.0 0 o Then the suggestion was made that perhaps we could have extra copies printed and sell them through advertisements in the numismatic media. Thus begins the records, in the handwriting of William Sumner Appleton, the Society's first secretary. 1- Jeremiah Colburn, Vice-President and Curator 2. William Sumner Appleton, Secretary 3. George Williams Pratt 4. Augustine Shurtleff 5. Henry Davenport, Treasurer 6. Dr. Winslow Lewis, President 7. William Eliot Lamb 8. Henry Dearborn Fowle To this list should probably be added the unmentioned name of John Kimball Wiggin whose name appears jointly with those of the other eight on the first page of the members list. Thus, the Society was instituted on March 3, 1860, the third in order of foundation of the numismatic societies of the United States, being junior only to the Numismatic and Antiquarian Society of Philadelphia (1858) and the American Numismatic Society of New York (1858). In the early years of the Society, persons who were elected Honorary or Corresponding members, paid no dues. So it is difficult to know when they ceased to be members. Dues were collected for most years from members, starting at $2.00 per year and increasing at intervals until 1995 when the dues are $10.00 per year„ 1860-1949 $2 00 No dues were collected from members between 1950-1959 @ 3 00 1897 and 1907. 1960-1965 @ 4 00 1966-1981 @ 6 00 No dues were collected from members between 1982-1987 @ 7 00 1911 and 1923 except when new members were 1988- @ 10 00 initially joined. They paid the dues plus $1.00 initiation. Life memberships were instituted in 1862 as follows: 1862-1927 @ $20.00 1928-1949 @ 25.00 In 1870 three members applied for Life Member- 1950-1987 @ 50.00 ship: 1988- @ 150.00 Jeremiah Colburn Henry Davenport James Root The Boston Numismatic Society applied for membership in the American Numis-matic Association in October, 1912 and was given number C1640. This was the first time clubs were allowed to apply for membership. There are no place names associated with the following names: C. C. Dearing 1927 C. Hanson 1951 James R. Nichols 1867- Stephen H. Roberts 1921 William P. Thayer 19 Victor Wagner 1961 Many of the Life members paid dues for approximately 25 years, then were no longer required to pay them. Some elected to pay a certain amount and thus be eligible for Life Memberships ahead of time. It is difficult to determine when this was done. The members in this category are: Charles A. Davis 1921-1951 Thomas Knudson 1941-1974 George W. Wardner 1923-1975 Some members paid their annual dues for a few years and were then elected to Honorary Membership. The dates when this was done are unknown for these: George H. Blake 1935-1955 Horatio R. Storer 1908-1922 One of the early By-Laws states: "No note shall be taken of the rejection of any person by ballot." Over the years many persons have applied for membership, but were never elected. Many of these can be found in the minutes of the meetings. The Treasurer's books for the period 1930-1953 are missing. If any of these are found, some of the missing data can be recorded. These members joined the American Numismatic Association in the years mentioned ( ) and are still members of the ANA in 1995: Henry Evanson (1931) Oscar Dodson (1933) (died 1996) Some were members for a very long time, as of March 1, 1998: 30 to 39 years Robert R. Andrews, II 38 (still a member in 1998) John E. Borhek 35 (still a member in 1998) Melvin E. Came 38 William Clark 32 Jeremiah Colburn 31 Sylvester S. Crosby 39 Charles A. Whiteneck 52 (still a member in 1998) From time to time, the Boston Numismatic Society has printed small booklets showing the Constitution, the By-Laws, and the current membership roster. This was done in 1867, 1871, 1884, 1928, 1944, 1950, and 1980. However, some of the information printed in these booklets does not correspond to the minutes of the meetings as shown in the Secretaries records. For isnstance, James H. Taylor is shown in the 1871 and the 1884 booklets as being a Corresponding member, whereas the Secretary's record of 1866, shows him as being elected an Honorary member. And again, the 1928 and 1944 booklets have the wrong Treasurers listed according the the Treasurer's record book from 1860 to 1928. The correct dates, according to the meeting records, are listed in this book under each member's name.
