Founded in April 1912, the parish was named in honor of the titular church of William Cardinal O’Connell in Rome by the founding pastor, Father Thomas McCarthy. The previous November, the archbishop was in Rome for his elevation to the College of Cardinals, the first native son and first archbishop of Boston to be so honored. Pope Saint Pius Tenth assigned him the ancient church of (San Clemente) St. Clement. The new parish was carved out of sections of Somerville and Medford. The first parish church was dedicated on the feast day of St. Clement, November 24, 1912 with Cardinal O’Connell presiding. The parish grew quickly. A grammar school began in 1919, just seven years after the founding of the parish; and a high school followed just six years later in 1925. The faculty of the schools consisted of Sisters of Saint Joseph of Boston; and, in the ensuing the years ably assisted by dedicated lay women and men. In its 100 storied and historic years, there have been four pastors Father Thomas F. McCarthy, 1893 (April, 1912 to May, 1940) Monsignor Robert P.
