As a learner of Borna, Amharic or English this tool may be used as a reference for having the correct term for a specific meaning. This general dictionary contains 2777 words and is in no wise an exhausted listing of terms one may need or one may use in any of the three languages presented here. The target audience for this publication is everyone desiring to say the correct word in the appropriate setting. The research for this listing was completed with this audience in mind so, there are some technical terms not included in this publication. The listings in this dictionary are first Borna then Amharic and English. Because this is set to be used first and foremost by the people of Shinasha and the Borna speaking communities the words have been arranged in this manner. The alpha order is based on the word in Borna therefore, one must know how to spell the word in Borna and the meaning in Borna is order to locate the English and Amharic words. Several words in Borna have multiple meaning thus increasing of the number of possible listings. As you observe the Borna spelling you will notice that the tone of the words are marked with the acute symbol (‘) whi h hanges the meaning and pronun iation of a word. The Shinasha people have several practices and cultural traditions that have been explained in this dictionary to the best of the editors’ ability and the help of native users of the Borna language. Where there was not a known word in English for the concept expressed in Borna a phrase has been used. Example: spelling and writing in Borna is aap’I k’op’ k’op’a, full mouth in Borna is k’uuma. At the time of this edition it is necessary for the user to be familiar with the word in Borna in order to locate the Amharic and English meaning. The words are listed according to the Borna alphabet. At a later date another section may be added with the alphabet order according to the Amharic alphabet or English alphabet order. Following the dictionary and word finders list there is some additional information provided to give guidance on how to write the Borna language. These sections address spelling, grammar, punctuation and tone. These are included as a reference for beginning and emerging writers. When compared to languages such as English or Amharic, Borna does not have a long written history. As a result, spellings and what word should be used for some terms may cause debate. It is with the joy of learning this general dictionary has been produced. When using this dictionary if the user comes across a phrase or word that is not quite what you understand it to mean know that a revised edition will be forthcoming. It has been made possible through the effort of many people. As the focus for this dictionary is to help all Borna speaking people the search for the just right vocabulary to include was done by a team of people. The Borna word collection was conducted by a group of Borna mother tongue teachers and expatriate through a number of workshops as well as through independent data collection. Those that contributed in this way are Asmamaw Imbiyale, Amsalu Tadesse, Asmamaw Mosissa, Fekadu Deressa, Simeneh Obsi, Aster Argeta, and Tsehay Jaleta, Brook Kebede, Tewodros Moges, Abenezer Gezahegn. Following the initial data collection there was tremendous effort to edit and check through the gathered data. The Borna language editing process was conducted by Asmamaw Imbiyale and Amsalu Tadesse, Asmamaw Mosissa. Those who collected the Borna data initially provided an Amharic gloss for many but not all of the terms. The technical work of layout and finalizing the publication for print was completed by Andreas Joswig, Edwina Martin and Tewodros Moges. We also thank Edwina and James Martin for checking English text. Finally this volume has been made possible because of the partnership of The Benishangul-Gumuz National Regional State Education Bureau and Culture Bureau with SIL Ethiopia.
