Introduction The International Symposium on Archaeometry (ISA) is a specialized forum for research and applications of Archaeometry and Archaeological Sciences that covers the full spectrum of topics, materials, techniques, chronologies and regions. The aim of this symposium is to promote the development and use of scientific techniques, for the extraction of archaeological and historical information from the cultural heritage and the paleoenvironment. It involves all Natural Sciences and all types of objects and materials related with human activity. In 2000, seventeen years ago, the 32nd International Symposium on Archaeometry, the first one in a Latin American country, was carried out successfully in Mexico City. This meeting certainly impacted the research on archaeometry and the archaeological sciences in Mexico showing the incredible potential of this interdisciplinary research for this country, rich in cultural heritage. After this period, the Mexican groups on archaeological sciences have grown and have been consolidated. Nowadays, from those small groups and laboratories under development, several networks were developed in Mexico. Since 2014 there is a National Laboratory of Sciences for Research and Conservation of Cultural Heritage (LANCIC) and a National Network of Applied Sciences for Research on Mexican Cultural Heritage (Red CAICPC) with more than 40 groups working together to develop the sciences in archaeology, among others fields. In fact, the 42nd International Symposium on Archaeometry has been organized, by second time in Mexico and Latin America, by several institutions and groups belonging to the National Network and to the National Laboratory (LANCIC), the Institute of Physics and the Institute of Anthropological Research of the National Autonomous University of Mexico (UNAM), the Autonomous University of Yucatán (UADY), The College of Michoacan (COLMICH), and the Autonomous University of Campeche (UAC). This Mexican multi-institutional academic effort brings us this time to Merida, Yucatan. A region plenty of amazing archaeological Maya remains and historical sites, to exchange experiences and knowledge about the last developments on archaeometric research. On behalf of the local organizing committee we would like to thank to these institutions and their authorities, as well as the National Council of Research and Technology of Mexico (CONACYT), our academic staffs and students, and the people involved in the organization for their support to carry out this important meeting. More than 280 abstracts were submitted by 256 participants and scheduled to ISA 2018, divided in 6 regular sessions. These works represent institutions from 41 countries of Asia, America, Africa, Europe and Australia, covering the entire world. At the ISA2018 we have two special sessions: Prof. Martin Aitken. In memoriam. In this special tribute, some presentations are dedicated to honoring the memory of Prof. Aitken and his many contributions to the field of Archaeometry. The second special session is devoted to Ancient Metallurgy in the Americas. The purpose of this Theme Session is to explore and promote, various key aspects of metallurgy in different regions of the Americas, setting out from a diversity of studies, including ore sources, mining technology, mineral processing and extractive metallurgy. On behalf of the standing committee, the local organizing committee and the organizing institutions, we welcome you to the 42nd International Symposium on Archaeometry. Wishing you all a very informative and enjoyable symposium!
