Well, actually, he did have some rivals. The biggest one was Prince Buster. The two of them became embroiled in a fierce musical feud which quickly spilled over among their fans. In ¡963, battles between the two sets of fans became so intense, the leaders of the Jamaican government had no choice but to step in. They called a cease-fire and brought the two performers together and had them pose for publicity pictures, burying the hatchet. I had a very similar thing with Gordon Lightfoot. Bob Dylan, Theme Time Radio, 2006 Wry, unpredictable, ruthlessly hilarious and deadly serious— sometimes all in the same sentence—there’s never been an American voice quite like Bob Dylan’s. Not just his audible voice, though that is certainly distinctive enough. The voice Bob Dylan brings to his songs is by turns, bold and bitter, wise and wary, mournful and majestic. It’s a voice that does seem, as Don McLean once suggested in “American Pie,” to come from you and me. In an article that appeared in Wanted Man, the late great Harry Smith, compiler of the fabled “Anthology of American Folk Music” noted exactly the same thing, overhearing a Dylan visit with Allen Ginsberg late one night. Smith noted “how human” Dylan had sounded. Perhaps it is this unexpected intimacy with our own heart—or is it ours with his?—that can explain why, after all the ducks and dodges 1
