Their long sandy beaches, rocky coves, flowers, country walks and well preserved megalithic and medieval ruins attract one and three quarter million visitors annually. Nestled uptothecoastofFrance, these islandsenjoymildwinterswhichmakethempopular forconferences,and longcontinental summers with temperatures in thehigh 60sand low 70s. The strong attraction of the venue for families has led Blue Guide the Channel Islandsto set a precedent by introducing pictures, legends and anecdotes aimed at appealingtoall agegroups. Whileprovidingthisnew dimensiontotheseries, theimportantemphasisonhistoricalresearchand detailed practical information which is the hallmark of Blue Guides has also been retained. I am grateful to Dr I. A. Kinnes m.a., ph.d., f.s.a. of the British Museum and Mr Robert Burns, assistant curator of the Guernsey Museum, for their archaeological introduction to the book. They are at present engaged in excavating the recently discovered passage grave, Les Fouaillages, on L'AncresseCommon.
