Bloomsburg: The UniversityMagazine From the President ONE HUNDRED SEVENTY-FIVEYEARSofoutstandingeducationalopportu- nities.Certainly, a milestonetocelebrateatatimewhenTwinkieshaveashelf lifeof45days,atotal knee replacementtakesasurgeon 40minutestocomplete andthe latesttechnologyseemstobecomeobsoletethe momentitleavesthe store. Timesweredifferentwhen ourpredecessor, the LiteraryAcademy,wasestablishedin 1839 "toteachtheelementsofaclassical education."Thatyearin Lexington, Mass.,anexperi- mental normal school openedas thefirststate-fundedinstitution inthe nationspecifically established forteachereducation. Startingwithjustthreestudents,theschool in Massa- chusettscouldbeconsideredanearlyexampleofwhatouracademywouldbecomewhenit waspurchasedbytheCommonwealthofPennsylvaniain 1916andrenamedthe Bloomsburg State Normal School. Ourinstitution hasgrown overtheensuingdecadeswith namechangestoreflectitsex- pandingmission, fromstateteacherscollegetostatecollege andtoday's BloomsburgUniver- sity. However, the valuesthatform Bloomsburg'sfoundation have remained:collaboration, community,critical thinking,diversity,excellence, integrity,knowledge,opportunity, respect andpersonalandprofessionalgrowth. Itwasthesevalues, alignedsowellwith myown.that attractedmetothe BloomsburgUniversitypresidencysixyearsago. Thesevaluesareoneofmanyreasons I celebrate BloomsburgUniversityonthisspecial anniversaryofourfounding.
