Accordingto contemporarysources, upwards of 1,200,000black menand womenjoined the ColoredFarmers' Alliancearound1890, andwefindmentionofmenatPeople's partyconventionsandother gatheringsuntil1900. Withoutextantmembership rosters, however, we can only guess at the actual size of the organization, but recent research has uncovered names of individuals throughout the South and Midwest who participated. The People's party, the political manifestation of Populism, hada love-haterelationshipwithblackmembershipduringtheperiod, and we have endeavored in this bibliography to give some idea of how the political climate radically changed for the worse as the Populists sought to includeblacksintheir efforts to gainelectedoffice. The politicalviolencethat ensued--from the Leflore County Massacre to the Wilmington Riots--coupled with widespreaddisfranchisementcreateda chargedracial atmospherethat still persists in parts of our nation. However, at its best, the Populist movement proved that biracial coalitions could effect change and create models for the future. This annotated bibliography on Black Populism covers that period most associated with the rise and fall of the agrarian movement at the close of the nineteenth century. Since no movementcan be understood outside its milieu, we have also included select items which relate specifically to black/white relationsintheSouthduringthattime, withspecialattentiontootherattemptsat biracial coalitions. All items are in English and with few exceptions published in the United States between 1880-2001. With the notable exception of most master's theses herein, all items have been examined firsthand, in order to correct longstanding citation errors. We also hope that we haven't added any new errors! For the sake of brevity and symmetry, we use "black" rather than "African American" in the annotations throughout, but we keep the original wordinginthe citations.
