BIALL Handbook of Legal Information Management BRITISH AND IRISH ASSOCIATION OF LAW LIBRARIANS (BIALL) The British and Irish Association of Law Librarians (BIALL) is the leading professional body in the UK and Ireland for information professionals working in the legal sector. BIALL is a self-supporting association which draws its income primarily from membership subscriptions. With over 700 personal and institutional members, the Association supports a number of different sectors including academic institutions, law firms, and barristers’ chambers, as well as students entering the profession. Continuing professional development is fundamental for legal information professionals, as it is vital they keep up to date with changes in the law. To this end, BIALL supports its members through the organization of regular training events, at both a national and regional level, and through the publication of its quarterly journal Legal Information Management. The Annual Conference is also an important event for BIALL members and non-members alike, providing an opportunity to learn about and discuss, formally and informally, the key issues affecting the legal information profession. BIALL has strong links with international legal information associations and offers bursaries to attend overseas conferences as well as its own conference. Practical support and advice is also given for the day-to-day issues affecting legal information professionals through a number of schemes run by the BIALL committees and publications, including the BIALL Newsletter, the Handbook of Legal Information Management and the Annual Salary Survey. She is much missed by all at BIALL and will be best remembered as the Chair of the Publications Committee, where under her leadership, the committee delivered an extra level of quality and depth to BIALL’s portfolio of publications. Her key achievements included updating and republishing the Legal Research Packs in 2010 having been expanded to cover more legal topics; the redesign of the Newsletter to improve its look and feel and include a greater range of content for members; and updating the BIALL Careers Information leaflet to help promote law librarianship as a profession. Sarah also took on the role as editor of this new edition of the BIALL Handbook and whilst she wasn’t able to complete the project, the time she spent in organizing author submissions and working with Ashgate has been invaluable. To recognize her contribution BIALL is proud to dedicate this new edition of the BIALL Handbook of Legal Information Management to her memory.
