Beyond THE Ionosphere Fifty Years of Satellite Communication Edited by Andrew Butrica J. — Beyond the Ionosphere Fifty Years of Satellite Communication October1995markedthefiftiethanniversaryofArthurC. Clarke'sfamousarticlein Wireless Worldproposingtheuse ofsatellitesplacedingeosynchronousorbit forworldwide communicationsrelay.Thearticleprovedprophetic, forit heralded the modern era of telecommunications. Beginning in the early 1960s, several series of satellites were launched into Earth's orbit; collectively they trans- formed the latter twentieth century, creating a global village ofinstantaneouscommunications. Previously, the ionospherehaddefinedthelimits ofradio communication; today, by going beyond the ionosphere, broadbandtelecommunicationhasenteredanewage. This book describes the first attempts to go beyond the ionos- phere, including both the earliest uses of the Moon as a passive, natural relay satellite and Project Echo, the mas- sive inflated satellite off which Earth stations bounced radiosignals, aswellascontemporarycommunicationsvia active-repeaterartificialmoonsinorbitabouttheEarth. It analyzes both American and foreign satellite communica- tions, the histories of several satellite communications companies,therolesofgovernmentagencies,andthecon- tributionofresearchlaboratories.
