Similarly, impor- tant parts of careful arguments have had to be excised from the bodies of some of the essays we did include. Where deletions have been made, we have used an ellipsis tc so indicate. References to literature not directly connected to the argument or the aims of this book have been deleted to save space; references to the sources of direct quotes from scholarly literatures have been maintained, however. Citation style remains consistent with the original usage for each article: endnotes including full citations appear in some articles, and in-text author and date references, with a list of sources at the end of the article, are used in others. A list of citations for the forty-seven articles in the book has been supplied to facilitate readers' efforts to locate the originals. The introductions to each part are meant to help orient readers to the articles and extracts that follow. References cited in these part introductions will be found in the general bibliography. In addition to the works cited in the general introduction and in the part introductions, a few suggestions for additional reading are included at the end of some part introductions. These latter sources do not appear in the general bibliography.
