Clearly, some facets of high ability cannot be explained by cog- nitive, developmental, personality, or social approaches considered in isola- tion. There is something at the intersection of these approaches—something deeply hidden, and at the same time very important. These are the extra- cognitive facets of high ability and they are what this volume is all about. We have wanted to see this book published for many years and are in spe- cial debt to two people without whom this book would not have been possible. Marina A. Kholodnaya initially introduced Larisa Shavinina to the fascinating topic of extracognitive facets of high ability, showing her their undoubted im- portance. Robert J. Sternberg was also well aware of the importance of extra- cognitive aspects of giftedness and creativity and supported the idea of this book from the beginning, inviting us to publish it in this series he edits for Lawrence Erlbaum Associates. Finally, a very grateful thanks to the contributors for their interesting chap- ters and the effort that they invested in preparing them. —Larisa V. Shavinina —Michel Ferrari Toronto, May 2002
