Raised to believe hard work is all you need to succeed, Jennifer (call her Jen, folks, Jennifer is way too formal) has certainly modeled that. Content to put her head down and do the best job she could, Jen and her husband Steve soon reaped the rewards of that work. It took only seven years for them to become overnight successes as a result of American Photo’s Top 10 Wedding Photographers list. Seven years. As an author, Jen has always believed that putting pen to paper (or finger to keyboard) was the key to success. And yet, years of writing led her nowhere. Out of the blue, she was contacted by this publisher to write a non-fiction book—Photo Fusion. Producing that first title reminded Jen of her first creative love—writing. Beyond Auto Mode is a natural second title for Jen as it combines her two talents perfectly. Along the way, Jen came to realize that she was not merely photographer or writer. Rather, she is a Creative, a person who thrives in a world full of interpretation and imagination. Despite living with one foot in the creative world, she remains firmly rooted in the life she has created with Steve and their two children. Learning to fly while rooted has been one of Jen’s greatest successes. Jen’s belief in the importance of hard work never wavers. Nor does her belief that integrity, respect, and humor are the cornerstones of a good life. No stranger to risk, this photographer/author/mom/wife/CEO is ready for the next big leap, knowing this might not work … but what if it does? iii BEYOND AUTO MODE iv CREDITS Acquisitions Editor Courtney Allen Editorial Program Coordinator Carol Kessel Project Editor Jennifer Bowles Technical Editor Alan Hess Editorial Director Robyn Siesky Business Manager Amy Knies Senior Marketing Manager Sandy Smith Vice President and Executive Group Publisher Richard Swadley Vice President and Executive Publisher Barry Pruett Book Designer Erik Powers v BEYOND AUTO MODE vi ACKNOWLEDGMENTS To write a book is to be one part of a team. While the words and ideas may be mine, what is between these pages is the result of an incredible collaboration. Without Courtney, who brainstormed ideas with me, Beyond Auto Mode would not have come to be. Carol has been an integral part of getting us to publication. Alan kept my technical explanations accurate, while Erik came up with the perfect design. A special thanks must go to Jen Bowles, my project editor and copy editor, who helped me sound far more intelligent than I really am. Beyond my Wiley team is my personal and professional support network. Without a doubt, my biggest fans and loudest cheerleaders are my boys, Logan and Ethan, and my husband, Steve. My extended network of friends generously let me pick their brains and quiz them about making their own images, and their struggles to do so. In fact, this book was written as an answer to many of my friends’ photography questions. A simple thank you never feels like enough and as a writer one would think I could find a more creative way to express my gratitude. But maybe, simple is best. So, thank you, each of you, for being on my team. vii BEYOND AUTO MODE viii
