Alan Rogers - in search of ‘the best’ Alan Rogers Guides were first published almost 50 years ago. Since Alan Rogers 3" published the first campsite guide that bore his name, the range has expanded and (0 olO now covers 27 countries in five separate guides. No fewer than 20 of the campsites O) selected by Alan for the first guide are still featured in our 2016 editions. m This guide contains impartially written reports on over 340 campsites in Italy, including a many of the very finest, each being individually inspected and selected. We also feature o 3 reports on over 80 of the very best sites in Croatia and Slovenia, destination countries which have seen a substantial surge in interest in recent years. We aim to provide you with a selection of the best, rather than information on all - in short, a more selective, qualitative approach. New, improved maps and indexes are also included, designed to help you find the choice of campsite that’s right for you. We hope you enjoy some happy and safe travels - and some pleasurable ‘armchair touring’ in the meantime! “ ...the campsites included in this book have been chosen entirely on merit, and no payment of any sort is made by them for their inclusion.” Alan Rogers, 1968 How do we find the best? The criteria we use when inspecting and selecting campsites are numerous, but the most important by far is the question of good quality. Peopie want different things from their choice of site so we try to include a range of campsite ‘styies’ to cater for a wide variety of preferences: from those seeking a smail peaceful campsite in the heart of the countryside, to visitors iooking for an 'aii singing, ail dancing’ site in a popular seaside resort. Those with more specific interests, such as sporting faciiities, culturai events or historical attractions, are also catered for. The size of the site, whether it’s part of a chain or privately owned, makes no difference in terms of it being required to meet our exacting standards in respect of its quality and it being 'fit for purpose’. In other words, irrespective of the size of the site, or the number of facilities it offers, we consider and evaluate the welcome, the pitches, the sanitary facilities, the cleanliness, the general maintenance and even the location. © o Contents o 3 r+ (D 3 w I Welcome to the 2016 Edition 4 Using the Aian Rogers Guides 6 The Alan Rogers Awards 10 ITALY Piedmont & Valle d'Aosta 1 Lazio 140 P 1 Liguria 2 Abruzzo & Molise 148 Lombardy 3 1 Campania 154 ’ 1 Lake Garda 4 Puglia & Basilicata 158 Trentino-Alto Adige 5 Calabria 162 Friuli-Venezia Giulia 71 Sicily 166 Veneto 76 ■ Sardinia 173 Emilia-Romagna 95 1 Tuscany 104 1 SLOVENIA 182 Umbria 129 1 Marche 135 1 CROATIA 194 Mobile Homes & Chalets 222 Travelling in Europe 228 1 Open All Year/Dogs 234 1 Index - Town & Village 235 1 Index - Campsite Region & Name 237 1 Expert opinions Independent and honest We rely on our dedicated team of Site Whilst the content and scope of the Alan (D Assessors, aii of whom are experienced Rogers guides have expanded considerably lO o campers, caravanners or motorcaravanners, since the early editions, our selection of to visit and recommend campsites. (A In recent years, sales of tents have increased dramatically. With very few excepfions, fhe campsites o c listed in this guide have pitches suitable for tents, caravans and motorcaravans. Tents, of course, come in a dazzling range of shapes and sizes. Modern family tents with separate sleeping pods are a increasingly popular and these invariably require large pitches with electrical connections. Smaller <D (A lightweight tents, ideal for cyclists and hikers, are also visible on many sites and naturally require correspondingly smaller pitches. Many (but not all) sites have special tent areas with prices adjusted accordingly. If in any doubt, we recommend contacting the site of your choice beforehand. Our Accommodation section 222 Over recent years, more and more campsites have added high quality mobile home and chalet accommodation. In response to feedback from many of our readers, and to reflect this evolution in campsites, we have now decided to include a separate section on mobile homes and chalets. If a site offers this aocommpdation, it is indicated above the site report with a page reference where full details are given. We have chosen a number of sites offering some of the best accommodation available and have included full details of one or two accommodation types at these sites. Please note however that many other campsites listed in this guide may also have a selection of accommodation for rent. ' You’re on your way! Whether you’re an ‘old hand’ in terms of camping and caravanning or are contemplating your first trip, a regular reader of our Guides or a new ‘convert’, we wish you well in your travels and hope we have been able to help in some way.
