Objectives Toevaluatetheeffectivenessandsafetyofbenzodiazepinesinthetreatmentofalcoholwithdrawal. Searchstrategy CochraneDrugsandAlcoholGroup’RegisterofTrials(December2009),PubMed, EMBASE, CINAHL(January1966toDecember 2009),EconLIT(1969toDecember2009).Parallelsearchesonwebsitesofhealthtechnologyassessmentandrelatedagencies,and theirdatabases. Selectioncriteria Randomizedcontrolledtrialsexaminingeffectiveness,safetyandrisk-benefitofbenzodiazepinesincomparisonwithplaceboorother pharmacologicaltreatmentandbetweenthemselves.Allpatientswereincludedregardlessofage,gender,nationality,andoutpatientor inpatienttherapy. Datacollectionandanalysis Twoauthorsindependentlyscreenedandextracteddatafromstudies.
