Increased performance does not mean maximizing weight and size, which have already reached the upper limit of economic value for the packer and consumer. It does, however, mean increasing performance related to calving percentage and weaning percentage; and increasing performance related to cow maintenance requirements and “pounds of calf per acre” effi ciency. Size Matters The Industry Problem Beckton cattle are already big enough for the consumer As shown on the graph on the next page, industry-wide and the packer. Using yearling weight EPD as the best cow size has increased substantially, 25% over this same available indicator of market size, the average for our period. But look at the industry-wide trend in feed use per sale bulls is +56, about the same as the Red Angus cow over the same period, shown by the use of hay: breed average, so for market size our cattle are directly comparable. Industry Hay Use (tons/animal unit) The big difference with Beckton’s program is that we Year 1978 1982 1986 1990 1994 1998 2002 2006 2010 select for additional weaning and yearling weight, but with Hay 1.43 1.62 1.91 2.00 1.94 1.99 2.08 2.05 2.08 the restriction that we have maintained the same cow size Usg. over time. In contrast, the industry has allowed cow size Pct. 100% 113 134 140 136 140 146 143 146 to increase at the same rate as calf size. Cow size is the (Src.: USDA Econ. Research Service, 2010 is newest available data) largest factor determining maintenance requirements. Our goal has been to increase effi ciency, not size. No other Industry-wide, production per cow is up about 22%, but seedstock breeding program has had such a goal and hay consumption per cow has risen 46%. maintained it for so long. Why does hay use increase at a faster rate than cow size or production per cow? Hay and grain are supplements Beckton Cow Weight Average (lb.) to the cow’s main diet, which is grass, and grass supply Year 1978 1982 1986 1990 1994 1998 2002 2006 2010 2011 is relatively fi xed by environment. Each increase in cow Wt. 1,1261,1261,064 1,115 1,0671,1251,1041,0931,0681,097 feed requirement must be met entirely by supplements, (mature lactating cows taken at weaning) or by a combination of supplement and reduced stocking Cow weights vary from year to year depending on grass, rate. A small increase in cow feed requirement leads to weather or other short term factors. But overall our cow a reduction in stocking rate or a large increase in higher- size has stayed fairly constant over time. cost, supplemental feed needs. Any gains achieved in the feedlot sector due to increased animal growth, have been overwhelmed by increased cost of production in the cow-calf sector. The Beckton Crew... We have accomplished this by selecting for growth, restricting birth weight and cow size creep, and multiplying each incremental change rapidly throughout our entire cowherd and all of our bloodlines. Usually this has meant working within our own bloodlines rather than introducing out-crosses, because the outside genetics for the direction we wanted to go haven’t been available. The overall key to success is simply that we have been making small progress in multiple traits, but doing it consistently over a very long period of time. ... making the Beckton Program work! Our bulls receive a “growing” Solution ration high in roughage and protein and not as high in energy as a steer would receive. We want to get a good Many cattlemen use Beckton bulls for their heifers because measure of gainability with which to compare bulls, of their low birth weights and high calving ease. Our bulls but we don’t want the bulls fat. are even better when used on cows, because replacement heifers tend to be selected from calves out of older cows. Keeping replacement heifers sired by Beckton bulls is the quickest way to limit cow size creep and to moderate cow size for the future. In our own program we use the same bulls on both heifers and cows. Every bull is used his fi rst year with heifers to evaluate calving ease, and used in future years with older cows. We get calving ease, growth, and moderate-sized replacements, all with the same bull. Quietness and Ease of Handling The necessity of record keeping means that our cattle will be handled much more than commercial cows. This benefi ts our seedstock customers because our cattle will be quieter and easier to handle.
