GARDEN OF THE YEAR COMPETITION 2016

Title: BBC Gardeners’ World Magazine:
Garden of the Year competition 2016 sponsored by Cobra Garden

Who can enter: The BBC Gardeners’ World Magazine Garden of the Year competition 2016 is open
to amateur gardeners who do not earn a living by designing or maintaining gardens
for money. The gardens must be private gardens that may be open occasionally to
the public for charities/fund-raising activities only, not as a profit-making activity for
the benefit of the owner. The gardens must also be maintained by the owner with
no more than one full-time helper or employee.
The competition will comprise of three categories: Small Space, Family Plot, Wildlife
Garden. The winning gardens will be those that the judges and readers deem to best
fulfil the criteria in the submitted category.

You should submit your garden for one category only.

Please choose the category most appropriate for your garden:

1) Small Space
Only open to gardens up to the size of a tennis court (approximately 25m x 10m /
80ft x 30ft). You must demonstrate full and varied use of all the space, showing
creativity and practicality throughout, and year-round interest.

2) Family Plot
Open to any size of garden. You must demonstrate full and varied use of the whole
space, and show in particular how the practicalities of your family life have been
met by the garden’s design and execution.

3) Wildlife Garden
Open to any size of garden. You must demonstrate the provision of a wide variety of
wildlife habitats, with appeal beyond a single species, including relevant, year-round
planting and feeding for named, specific wildlife.
How to enter:

Complete the form for the category you wish to enter and submit it with up to 8
jpegs of your garden to the relevant email address.

Image files submitted should be saved using the following information:
- the category
- surname
- Image number

For example, the first image should be saved as WildlifeJones1, the second image as
WildlifeJones2, then WildlifeJones3, etc.

The email subject line for your entry should include the category, surname and date
you entered, e.g. WildlifeJones15Feb16.

The total size of your entry form and images should not exceed 18MB.
The closing date for entries is 5pm on 27 June 2016.

Judging and Selection Process:
The BBC Gardeners’ World Magazine editorial team will create a long list of gardens
for each of the 3 categories. From this list, a specialist judging panel will produce a
shortlist (3 gardens from each category). If your garden is shortlisted you will
receive a visit from the BBC Gardeners’ World Magazine editorial team.

The final judging panel will select a winner in each of the 3 categories, plus an
overall Judges’ Choice winner. The category winners and overall Judges’ Choice
winner will be announced in October 2016 on gardenersworld.com and in the
November 2016 issue of BBC Gardeners’ World Magazine.

The 3 category winners will be entered into the People’s Choice Award. The
People’s Choice Award will be voted for online by visitors to gardenersworld.com
during late October 2016. The People’s Choice winner will be announced on
gardenersworld.com in November 2016 and in the December 2016 issue of BBC
Gardeners’ World Magazine.

We will keep applicants updated throughout the selection process.

Judging panel: The judging panel will be chaired by Lucy Hall, Editor of BBC Gardeners' World
Magazine and will include expert judges from the world of gardening.

Prizes: All shortlisted gardens will be professionally photographed, unless by prior
agreement or circumstances prevent this, and will appear in gardenersworld.com
and BBC Gardeners’ World Magazine.
The 3 category winners will each win £2,000 RRP-value of Cobra garden machinery
of their choice and a trophy.
The Judges’ Choice winner and People’s Choice winner will each win a further
£1,000 RRP-value of Cobra powered gardening equipment of their choice.
The 6 runners-up in the category shortlists will each win £250 RRP-value of Cobra
garden machinery of their choice.
Also, voters in the People’s Choice award will each be automatically entered into a
prize draw to win 1 of 5 prizes of £100 RRP-value of Cobra garden machinery of
their choice.

TERMS & CONDITIONS
1. The Promoter is Immediate Media Company London Limited, Vineyard House, 44 Brook Green, London
W6 7BT. The competition is sponsored by Cobra Garden Limited.
2. The BBC Code of Conduct for competitions can be found at www.bbc.co.uk/competitioncode/ and all BBC
magazines comply with the Code.
3. The competition is open to all residents of the UK (England, Wales, Scotland, Northern Ireland or the
Channel Islands), aged 16 years or older, except the employees of the Promoter and Sponsor, their
families, agencies or anyone else associated with the competition. Gardeners aged 16 or 17 years old must
obtain permission from their parent/guardian.
4. You are responsible for ensuring that selected images support your garden’s entry. You also represent that
all information you provide upon registration and at all other times will be true, accurate, current and
complete.
5. The Promoter does not accept any responsibility for incomplete, lost, delayed or fraudulent entries.
6. The closing date for entries is 5pm on 27 June 2016. Entries received after the closing date of the
competition will not be considered. Only one entry will be permitted per person.
7. You should enter by submitting the form for the category you wish to enter to the relevant email address
along with up to 8 jpegs of your garden. The total size of your entry form and images must not exceed
18MB. Multiple emails will not be accepted. Entries submitted without images will be rejected.
8. All entries will be reviewed by the BBC Gardeners’ World Magazine editorial team. The BBC Gardeners’
World Magazine editorial team will create a longlist of gardens for each of the 3 categories. From this list,
a specialist judging panel will produce a shortlist (3 gardens from each category). All entries will be
marked against the selection criteria.
9. Shortlisted entries will be notified by phone or email by 31 July 2016. In the event the Promoter cannot
reach a shortlisted entrant within 7 working days from notice, the Promoter reserves the right to ask the
judges for a substitute.
10. The BBC Gardeners’ World Magazine editorial team will visit the shortlisted gardens for promotional
activities and features. Visits will take place by 19 August.
11. The judges will select 3 category winners plus one overall Judges’ Choice winner from the shortlist.
12. Readers of gardenersworld.com will select the People’s Choice winner out of the 3 category winners on
gardenersworld.com. See the BBC Gardeners’ World Magazine website for further details nearer to the
time. Additional terms and conditions will apply.
13. The category winners and overall Judges’ Choice winner will be announced in October on
gardenersworld.com and in the November issue of BBC Gardeners’ World Magazine. The People’s Choice
winner will be announced on gardenersworld.com during November and in the December issue of BBC
Gardeners’ World Magazine. The Promoter will notify all winners independently by phone and email.
14. All shortlisted entries will appear on gardenersworld.com and in BBC Gardeners’ World Magazine. In the
event the Promoter cannot reach a winner within 7 working days from notice, the Promoter reserves the
right to offer the prize to a runner-up, or to offer the prize in any future promotion.
15. The decision of the judges is final and no correspondence relating to the competition will be entered into.
16. There is no cash alternative and the prize will not be transferable.
17. The competition prizes are subject to availability.
18. The Promoter reserves the right to substitute the prize with one of the same or greater value.
19. You must supply to the Promoter (the publisher of BBC Gardeners’ World Magazine) your full name, email
address and daytime telephone number. The Promoter will use your personal details in accordance with
the Immediate Privacy Policy (www.immediatemedia.co.uk/privacy-policy).
20. By entering, you accept that your garden, names and location may be used in pre-arranged publicity for
the competition by the Promoter and Sponsor.
21. By entering, you grant the Promoter a free, perpetual non-exclusive, royalty-free, transferable, sub-
licensable, worldwide licence to use or reproduce all images submitted for the competition in its
publications, websites, social media and other media outlets.
22. The Promoter reserves the right, at its sole discretion, to amend these terms and conditions or to cancel,
alter or amend the competition at any stage, if deemed necessary in its opinion, or if circumstances arise
outside of its control.
23. The Promoter excludes liability to the full extent permitted by law for any loss, damage or injury occurring
to any entrant arising from his or her entry into the competition or occurring to the winners arising from
their acceptance of a prize.
24. The Promoter excludes liability to the full extent permitted by law for any damage occurring to any
gardens arising from the involvement of this competition.
25. The Promoter reserves the right to refuse access to the competition for any reason at any time.
26. The competition is subject to the laws of England.
27. By entering the competition you agree to be bound by these terms and conditions.

Sustainability of the garden - appropriateness of the plants to the soil and aspect
