Basingstones has already involved hundreds of people searching for stones painted and hidden around the borough for children and families to discover and share. Hidden under benches, trees or in parks, the aim is to get people to be creative, share their photos and ere- ate a ‘real sense of community’. The idea was brought to Bas- ingstoke by mother-of-two Rachel Brown who was told about the craze in Bournemouth with its Love On The Rocks campaign. In the short time since setting up the group, residents have been sharing their photos on the Face- book group, with a new photo being uploaded almost on a daily basis. Rachel said: “I am delighted with the brilliant response that Basing- stones has received. “Scrolling down our wonderful Facebook group page and seeing all the beautifully painted stones and happy faces of those who have found them, you can’t help but smile and feel inspired, “This shared interest has created areal sense of community. “It’s such a simple yet lovely idea. It'sagreat way to spend time together, get outdoors, be creative and spread some joy. Word is spreading, new people are joining the group alll the time and more and more fantastic Basingstones are appearing around our town and parks ete. “Thope everyone loves the concept as much we do, gets involved and has fun” Jovi Rose and Mason have joined in the search for Basingstones Decision to bring school sex education up to date backed By Eva Astreinidou BASINGSTOKE’S MP welcomed gov- ernment plans to modernise relation- ship and sex education in schools for the first time in 17 years. More than 30 MPs joined Maria Miller in campaigning to amend the Children and Social Work Act to make the lessons compulsory for all chil- dren for the first time. The move followed the 2016 ‘Women and Equalities Select com- mittee report on sexual harassment in schools and research showing an alarming prevalence of sexting, viewing of online pornography among children and unwanted sexual touch- ing at school Mrs Miller said ‘we owe it’ to chil- dren to give them the right tools to navigate an ‘increasingly complex world. She said: “The world in which chil- dren grow up has changed dramat cally over the past 17 years but guid- ance given to schools has stayed the ‘same. Successive governments have not acted to keep this guidance rel- evant and it now predates the internet age which is totally unacceptable.” Following an inerease in reports of sexual harassment worldwide in the last few months, Mrs Miller led a debate in November to further push for action to ‘stamp out the issue and ensure children are safe at school. The debate followed a committee hearing in October in which schools’ minister Nick Gibb confirmed current guidance does not state specifically that children who sexually abuse other children at school should not be put back in the same classroom. Speaking last month, she said: “Parents have the ultimate respon- sibility in making sure their children understand the world in which we live and in particular what is a good and healthy relationship “But schools have a critical role to ensure every child gets the right information to make good decisions in an increasingly sexualised world. “The internet has revolutionised our children’s lives but they still need to be taught how to make the right decisions. “The guidance given to schools on relationship and sex education needs tobeup todateand reflect the modern challenges children face. “Understanding issues of consent, the harmful effects of online pornog- raphy and sexting have to be part of any child’s education. “This new consultation will help make that happen.” Baby treated for injuries: man and woman arrested ‘TWO people were arrested after a baby girl was taken to hospital with unexplained injuries. Police confirmed on December 20 they have launched an investigation following the incident in Poynings Crescent. ‘The child was taken to Basingstoke hospital, before being transferred to Southampton General Hospital for treatment to her injuries. ‘A 34-year-old man and a 29-year- old woman, both from Basing- stoke, were arrested in connection with the investigation, Both have since been released from custody but remain under investigation >> Got a story? The court heard that he twice demanded payment of £10,000 in bitcoin from the school in order for him to stop carrying out bur- glaries. ‘The defendant also pleaded guilty to two charges of theft of items from Tesco stores on the days preceding the two motor- way incidents Judge Keith Cutler ordered psychiatric reports to be pre- pared on the defendant who is being detained at a mental health hospital, before sentencing at Winchester Crown Court on March 2 One of the incidents, on Satur- day, September 23, led to police closing the M3 off for more than 11 hours. Bomb disposal experts were called to investigate the “poten- tially hazardous material” that was thrown onto the carriageway from a motorway bridge between junetions 9 and 11 In the earlier incident on the same bridge, police received reports of something being dropped on to the carriageway and that an object was alight, but when officers attended they found only broken glass and no fire END LESS. ¢ N To advertise in the Observer call 01256 952180 01635 780000 Equity Release Adviser In Basingstoke Your Home.
