Dear Scholars, "Education is the key." This is a famous adage that has been around for years and because it is a short phrase that isn't decorated with a lot colorful Ia uage, the depth of this metaphor is easily overlooked. My goal a principal of Barringer Academy f the Arts and Humanities (BAAH} is to pack our educational program with experiences, skills ools and opportunities 1 that will equip everyone who enters Barringer Academy of the Arts and Humanities and exits as a senior with the keys to unlock any door they choose to enter. There re many keys available to our scholars within the corridors of BA~H,but there are four that if owned and ./ mastered, will provide you with limitless positive possibilities. Those keys are metacognition, understanding, academic readiness and pride. Every encounter you have as a BAAH scholar presents you with a choice and every choice you make moves you closer to your post secondary plans. Imagine each choice you make is a key you are choosing. What doors do you want your keys to open? The first key is metacognition. Metacognition is an exciting word that all of you need to own and practice. It is thinking about thinking. It is asking yourself questions to clarify your understanding f anything. Practicing this type of cognitive engagement in high school prepares you for a enriching life as an adult. Most have a goal after high school to get a good job or start a career. This may include goin to college, a trade school or you might immediately join the work force. Our metacog itive scholars, regardless of the path they choose, will be constantly challenging themselves for continuous improvement. Do you have this key? The second key is understanding. I presented with a difficult situation with ano her scholar or with a staff person, what do you hoose? Do you choose understanding or do you embrace conflict? Which key do you wa t to own and take with you after high school? Where do you think each key will lead you? hen you combine understanding and metacognition, you are developing a powerful, positiv mind. Do you have this key? Our third key is academic readiness. What motivates you to Hend class each day? Do you do your best in all of your classes daily? Are you motivated by the fear of punishment or by what is needed to each your goals? What are you goals? Your answers to these metacognitive questions ill unveil your academic readiness. Do y u have this key? Our final key is pride; n t the pride t at prevents some from apologizing when they are wrong, but the type of pride t at makes you want to do what it takes to make yo r family shine, your school shine and unravel this misconception that another high school i a better choice. The difference between our school nd the next school is YOU!! What re you doing to make our school great? Where is your pri e? Each of you as a class has made your contribution to BAAH, but wha will you take away. Thank you to the senior class for a ways keeping me on my toes and bei g honest about what you want from me.
