Page 1 Editorial The other day, I'd a long discussion with Dr Shardadevi Ashar ( of Vajreshwari Vruddhashram for Bhatias) about the status-progress of her newly established Home for the aged Bhatias. She shared her experience as under- 1. Two years have passed since its inception and not a single person has come to stay. 2. We've given insertions in Gujarati Newspapers, Displayed on GBF Website, Facebook, Newsletter and displayed posters in 44 Buildings of Bhatia Trusts. Nothing has worked. We were expecting people from 44 Buildings of Bhatia Trusts. 3. Perhaps these 44 Buildings might be serving as Home for the Aged. 4. Perhaps their children would not like their parents to stay in Retirements Home. 5. Perhaps, it is a very good sign that all the Aged Bhatias are living a happy life and they do not need any Vruddhashram. This experience has brought few interesting facts that are reported. They are- 1. Many of the tenants of 49+ Trust Buildings in Mumbai are owners of Car and many own a flat in suburbs. 2. Some of them are indulging in extracting funds from Bhatia Trusts under one or the other pretext. 3. Some members of Bhatia community having ownership flats in South Mumbai do come and collect donation (Food grains) from Bhatia Mahajan. They park their car at Metro Cinema and then collect the bags in Taxi at Mahajan & then transfer in their car. They sell off these foodgrains to others and collect cash. 5. Some members who appear to be needy also were seen to sell off their foodgrains (collected as donation from Mahajan) to the security staff in their societies. 6. One incident has been reported from Bhatia Boarding-Borivali: Local guardians of the students asked their wards to apply for scholarship to Oman Memorial Trust. All these applicants received cheques. The Management of Bhatia Boarding asked them, When your requirements are met with by the Boarding, why do you look for funds elsewhere? The guardians apologised and they returned the cheques. 7. One old lady (widow) who was living on donations from Bhatia Trusts, left a note in favour of one very honest Trustee of a healthy Bhatia Trust, that he should take care of her last rites and her bank balance be managed by him. After her death, bank balance in her account was Rs.6Lacs. 8. An MBA student approached DBBMM for a temporary educational loan of Rs. One lac. She received it very promptly from DBBMM and returned the sum after one month, stating that she could secure the admission by paying the fees in time and now she is able to repay the loan.
