The response was immediate and overwhelmingly positive. Families who felt adrift in despair now had options to try. “I have Alzheimer’s and daily use the coconut oil and MCT oil and after a month is has helped me tremendously,” wrote one reader. “My father suffers from early-stage Alzheimer’s and my mother’s memory was beginning to fail – they are both in their 80s. We got this book and started following the recommendations… we have noticed an amazing difference! I am even following the course and have noticed an improvement in my memory as well,” wrote another. 91-Year-Old Alzheimer’s Patient Plays Scrabble, Does Math in Her Head Recently, I spoke to Debra Glasper, who cares for her 91-year-old mother in her Arizona home. In 2013, The Mayo Clinic diagnosed Debra’s mother with Alzheimer’s; yet, her condition remains remarkably stable, year after year. “She functions very well,” Debra told me. “She makes her bed, helps me cook, and she plays gin rummy and Scrabble. She can’t play bridge anymore, but she can still do math in her head, which she loves.” Debra follows various recommendations from this book, adjusting them as needed. “I wish I had it years ago,” she told me. Two points that Debra made during our talk really struck me. First, Alzheimer’s runs in Debra’s family: her mother’s sisters and her maternal grandmother all suffered from it. But Debra has observed her mother maintain her cognitive function, while her aunts steadily declined. The aunts relied on conventional medicine; while Debra supplies her mother with a variety of alternative remedies recommended here. Second, even as her mother ages, her health improves. Through my book, Debra found Dr. Eric Udell, a homeopathic physician, to advise on her mother’s care. “At first, we were going every month to Dr. Udell; then, it was every six weeks. Now it’s, ‘Let’s see you every few months.’ And the same with her primary doctor.” 1 The Dawn of the Age of Treatable Alzheimer’s Clearly, people are looking for alternative approaches, because conventional medicine has virtually nothing to offer them for the horror of Alzheimer’s. In fact, just as I sat down to write this new introduction, a headline popped up on my screen: “Alzheimer’s researchers seethe over years of missteps after latest drug failure.” The article describes scientists “who have toiled for decades” expressing “frustration and even anger that their field has not made more progress toward a cure.” But that’s not how Dr. Dale Bredesen, the founding President and CEO of the Buck Institute for Research on Aging, sees the situation. “I have never been more optimistic about the future,” he told me. “We’re at the dawn of the age of treatable Alzheimer’s. I think that in five years, you will see this as a routinely reversible problem.” Dr. Bredesen is one of the big stories in brain research to emerge since the first edition of Awakening from Alzheimer’s. In 2014, he published “Reversal of cognitive decline: a novel therapeutic program,” which described how his new protocol had successfully reversed Alzheimer’s in 9 out of 10 patients. In my interview with him here, Dr. Bredesen explains how he treats patients by optimizing every aspect of their health. Instead of seeking a single magic pill, he works to enhance their nutrition and reduce their inflammation, along with other important healing strategies. That multi-faceted approach to cognitive decline is exactly what I recommend that you consider. Alzheimer’s is a complex disease for which there is no existing pharmaceutical answer. Surrounding the problem with many remedies may provide the way forward. As Dr. Bredesen told me, “Between 2002 – 2012, one decade, there were 244 clinical trials for Alzheimer’s disease, at a cost of billions of dollars. 243 failed outright, and the one that succeeded had a very minimal impact. So the problem is that we’re asking the drug to do too much. A single drug can not do all these dozens and dozens of things.” A Growing Emphasis on Low Carbs, Healthy Fats Another big story in brain health since this book’s first edition is the growing consensus on diet. Most mainstream medical institutions continue to advocate for a low-fat diet with regular consumption of whole grains. But increasing evidence points to the brain-boosting benefits of the exact opposite approach: abandoning carbs and loading up on healthy fats. Dr. David Perlmutter has become a leading advocate of the low-carb, high fat diet with two huge bestselling books, Grain Brain and Brain Maker. Grain Brain exposed how wheat, carbs, 2
