The law says that school councils are to be com- posed ofthe following: the principal ofthe school (who serves as co-chairperson teachers in the ) school, community members and. at the high school level, at least one student. The purpose of the school council is to give parents, teachers, community members and students more ofa role inshapingthepoliciesandprogramsoftheschool. The law gives the council responsibility in four areas: assisting the principal in adopting educa- tional goals for the school, identifying the educa- tional needs of students attending the school, reviewing the school building’s annual budget, and formulating a school improvement plan.
