AIS 2012 was organized at the same time and place as ICIAR 2012, the International Conference on Image Analysis and Recognition. Both conferences areorganizedbyAIMI–AssociationforImageandMachineIntelligence—anot- for-profitorganizationregisteredinOntario,Canada,andarecosponsoredbythe CenterforPatternAnalysisandMachineIntelligenceoftheUniversityofWater- loo, the Kitchener Waterloo Chapters of the IEEE Computational Intelligence Society, and the IEEE Systems, Man and Cybernetics Society. For AIS 2012, we received a total of 48 full papers from 15 countries. The review process was carried out by members of the Program Committee of the conference.Eachpaper was reviewedby at leastthree reviewersand checkedby the Conference Chairs. A total of 31 papers were finally accepted and appear in one volume of the proceedings. The high quality of the papers is attributed first to the authors, and second to the quality of the reviews provided by the experts. We wouldlike tosincerelythankthe authorsforrespondingtoourcall, and to thank the reviewers for their careful evaluation and feedback provided to the authors. It is this collective effort that resulted in the strong conference programand high-quality proceedings. We are very pleased to include in the conference program keynote talks by well-known experts including Wiro Nissen, Delft University of Technology, The Netherlands; Rudolf Kruse, University of Magdeburg, Germany, Germany; Bob Fisher, University of Edinburgh, UK; Bioucas Dias, Instituto Superior T´ecnico, Portugal.Wewouldliketoexpressoursinceregratitudetothekeynotespeakers for accepting our invitation to share their vision and recent advances in their respectiveareasof specialty.Specialthanks arealso due to the localOrganizing Committee, andto the members ofthe committee fortheir adviceandhelp. We are also grateful to Springer’s editorial staff, for supporting this publication in the Lecture Notes in Artificial Intelligence (LNAI) series. WewouldliketothankKhaledHammouda, thewebmasteroftheconference, for maintaining the Web pages, interacting with the authors and preparing the proceedings. We would also like to acknowledge the professional service of Via- gens Abreu in taking care of the registration process and the special events of the conference. VI Preface For those who were not able to attend AIS 2012, we hope this publication provides a good view of the research presented at the conference, and we look forward to meeting you at the next AIS conference.
