We have seen the Olympic and Paralympic Games, the Goodwill Games and the IAAF Grand Prix Final - all on our shores over the past two years. The interest built from the professional and successful organisation of these events has ignited the sport in Australia. In 2002 the fruits of this success will flow into an exciting new series showcasing Australia's top performers as they vie for Commonwealth Games selection and ultimately glory. Athletics will remain in its purest essence, but what you will see is a new package of events, a developing contingent of new-age athletes and a drive to grow the sport out-of-stadium. There is a new set of heroes in world champion Dmitri Markov, world championships medallist Bronwyn Eagles, walks star Nathan Deakes and young guns Georgie Clarke, Craig Mottram and Jana Pittman joining the household names of Cathy Freeman, Louise Sauvage, Tatiana Grigorieva and Matt Shirvington. To harness this talent and public interest, Athletics Australia through the support of principal sponsor Telstra, support sponsors New Balance, IGA, Accor, Qantas and partners the Australian Sports Commission, Australian Commonwealth Games Association, Australian Olympic Committee and Australian Paralympic Committee presents the following new programs in 2002: • Telstra A-Series - replacing the Telstra Athletics Grand Prix, this represents the biggest change in domestic competition for many years with more entertainment, tighter schedules and better competition. • IGA Play Athletics - Athletics Australia's junior development program including Team Athletics for primary school children. • Running Australia - a tiered structure of Australia's major Out of Stadium running events. With a vision of success at the Commonwealth Games, IPC World Championships and World Junior Championships, Australia's athletes will be hungry to excel in the Telstra A-Series and Telstra A-Championships. At the grass roots level, the sport is committed to promoting the important life skills of running, walking, jumping and throwing in schools right through to events for the everyday jogger and person seeking a healthy lifestyle. As your support of athletics is valued highly, we hope you enjoy the year ahead and the programs that Athletics Australia is delivering. Andrew Forrest Chairman p6 ~ Athletics Australia Season Guide 2002 MESSAGE FROM TELSTRA As a principal sponsor of Athletics Australia, Telstra is delighted to support the 2002 Telstra A Series. This important series promises to delight and inspire our sports loving nation, with the performances of our superb Australian athletes. Telstra is proud to support these elite athletes – each a role model for young Australians, as they continue to demonstrate the discipline, team spirit and competitiveness required to reach this level of sporting achievement. As with our young Australian athletes, Telstra is committed to being a world leader as we strive for excellence in everything we do. We do not underestimate the challenge of competition and aim to deliver an exceptional performance. Telstra believes in putting back into the community. One way we do this is by supporting the development of athletics in this country, particularly providing Australians with access to some of this country’s finest sports people. As part of this year’s Telstra A Series, we look forward to providing hundreds of Australian children with access to our elite athletes through a range of regional and metropolitan athletic clinics. We wish all the athletes the best for this important series and we look forward to continuing to work with Athletics Australia to spread the pleasure that athletics brings to so many Australians.
