[email protected] ABSTRACT Anewspecies,AulonemianitidaJudz.,isdescribedfromthePakaraimaMountainsotGuyana,South America.Itisalarge-leavedspeciesthatdiflersfromtheMesoamericanspeciesA.laxaandA.pa- triaemItssmooth,shining,non-stnate,non-maculatefohageleafsheaths.Anillustrationolthe newspeciesandakeytothespeciesofAidoneniiafromtheGuayanaHighlandsareprovided. RESUMEN Sedescribeunaespecienueva,AulonemianitidaJudz.,delasmontanasdePakaraima,Guyana, AmericadelSur.Esunaespecieconlaminasfoliaresgrandesyanchasparecidaalasespecies MesoamericanasA.laxayA.patriae,perosedistingueporsusvainasfoliareslisasylustrosas,sm estriacionesomanchitas.Semcluyenunailustraciondelanuevaespecieyunaclavedelasespecies deAulonemiadelasmontanasdeGuayana. Sincethepublicationofthegrasstreatmentforthe"FloraoftheGuianas"project (Judziewicz 199f),several morespecimensofanewbamboo(Poaceae: Bambusoideae:Bambuseae:Arthrostylidiinae)speciesfromtheGuayanaHigh- landshavecometolight.ThenameAulonemianitidahaslongbeeninprint, appearingasanomennuduminBogganetal,(1997:168)checklistofGuianas plants,and,basedontheBoyanspecimen,wasrecognizedasalikelynewspecies aslongagoas1988.Eventhoughallfiveknowncollectionsaresterile,thetaxon ItShseoedxiasmtipnlcetiovfeCtlhaartkI(h1a9v8e9,c1h9o9s2e)nwthooprhoapsosneaimtehderseeavseraalnediwstsipnecctiievse,sfpoelclioewsinmg thebamboogenusChusqueaKunthbasedonmateriallackinginflorescences. Specimenswereexaminedfromthefollowingherbaria:F(2002),FDG(1988),K (1989),MO(2004),NY(1989),US(2004),UWSP(2004),andWIS(2004). Henkd.R.WiUuimi.S.Fratello.L.Williarm4493(FDG,MO.US,WIS). DISCUSSION Auloucmianitidaisendemictoelevationsof1500-2100mmcloudforestson sandstone tepuisinthePakaraima Mountains(Mt. Ayangannaand Mt. Wokomung;allcollectionscomefromanareaofabout30kminlength)of GuyananeartheBrazilianfrontierThespeciesepithetderivesfromthenitid orshinyfoliageleafsheaths.Avernacularnameis"rerobalh"(Boyan120). Thereare35describedspeciesofAulonemiathroughouttropicalAmerica (Clarketal.1997;Judziewiczetal.1999,2000)and1amcurrentlyworkingona revisionofthegenus.Aulonemianitidaappearstobemostcloselyrelatedto theMesoamericanspeciesA.laxa(EMaek.)McClureandA.patriaeR.Pohl(Pohl &Davidse1994).Allthreetaxahavebroad,fimbriatefoliageleaveswithdis- tinctivekeeledsheaths,butA.laxaandA.patriaehavesheathsthatarestriate andmaculatetheirentirelengths.Aidoncniitinitidadiffersinitssmooth,shiny, non-maculatesheathsthatarestriate,ifatall,onlyinthefinal1cmorsobelow theligulararea.ThetwoMesoamericanspeciesalsodilierintheirgenerally 1266 BRIT.ORG/SIDA21(3) longer(10-32mm)fimbriae;thoseofA.hixaarestraightandappressecltothe cuhn,notspreadingasinA.nitidaandA.patviae. Thereareeightspeciesol the Auloncmici intheGuayanaHighlands (.Judziewicz2004).Inthe"Florao(theVenezuelanGuayana"(Judziewiczetal. 1991;Judziewicz2004)AuhviciuiauUidawouldkeytoeitherA.deficxa(N.E. Brown)McClure,A.chimantacnsisjudz.&rDavidse,orA,/dutien.si.sjudz.& Davidse.HoweverthesethreetaxahavesmallerloHagelealblades(amaximum of22X4.5cmversusatleast25x7cminA.nilida),longerfunbriae(I0~20 mm longversus7-10mm in A.nitida),andcompletelystriate foliage leaf sheaths. Aulononuidcflcxa,theonlyotherspeciesknowntromGuyana,is presentathigherelevationsonMt.Roraima(ca.2800m),aswellasonseveral Venezuelantepuis.Auloncmiapatula(Pilg.)McClurefromAndeanColombia andEcuadorhassimilarlylargefoliageleaves,butthesheathsarenon-keeled, non-striate,andtheIimbriaeareconspicuousallalongthesheathsmarginsas wellasatthesheathsummit.AkeydilterentiatingthespeciesofAulonemia loundintheGuayana1lighlandsfollows.
