These financial statements and financial highlights are the responsibility of the Trust's management. Our responsibility is to express an opinion on these financial statements and financial highlights based on our audits. The financial highlights for each ofthe three years in the period ended June 30, 1994 were audited by other auditors whose report, dated September 30, 1994, expressed an unqualified opinion on those statements. The other auditors' report included an explanatory paragraph that discussed the Trust's procedures for accounting for and reporting the vsdue of securities which are not readily ascertainable. We conducted our audits in accordance with generally accepted auditing standards. Those standards require that we plan and perform the audit to obtain reasonable assurance about whether the financial statements and financial highlights are fi-ee of material misstatement. An audit includes examining, on a test basis, evidence supporting the amounts and disclosures in the financial statements and fmancial highlights. An audit also includes assessing the accounting principles used and significant estimates made by We management, as well as evaluating the overall financial statement presentation. believe that our audits provide a reasonable basis for our opinion. In our opinion, the financial statements and financial highlights referred to above present fairly, in all material respects, the financial position ofthe Massachusetts State Teachers' and Employees' Retirement Systems Trust at June 30, 1996 and 1995, and the results of its operations, the changes in its net assets and its financial highlights for the years then ended, in conformity with generally accepted accounting principles.
