Cover: Lot 106 Copyright © 2017 Kolbe & Fanning Numismatic Booksellers LLC • All Rights Reserved Welcome to the 2017 Book Auction Welcome to our 2017 New York Book Auction, held in conjunction with the New York International Numismatic Convention (NYINC). This is the 45th year of this important annual show, which brings visi- tors to New York from around the world. Our firm, which celebrates its 50th anniversary this year, first held a public auction in New York in 1982—also in conjunction with the NYINC show. The world has changed since then, and our small world of passionate numismatists has changed as well. However, our shared love of the his- toric and the beautiful, the original and the authentic, remains the same. While we eagerly pursue new approaches to collecting and studying coins, we simultaneously cherish the traditions that we have inherited. One difference between a casual collector and a passionate collector is that the latter appreciates the wealth of knowledge and insight that we have been granted by those who preceded us. We do our part to con- tribute to this wealth, knowing that someday it will be our turn to pass it along. This year’s New York Book Auction reflects the fact that we all forge our own paths in this field of ours. It includes many standard references that are familiar to most of us and vital to our day-to-day work. It also, however, includes a large number of works that are infrequently seen or entirely unfamiliar to us. These lesser-known volumes emphasize the individualism that lies beneath the collective tradition. In this catalogue, we welcome you to explore the world of numismatic literature and, in particular, to give more than a passing glance at some of its less familiar corners. We hope you find something that intrigues you and increases that innate curiosity that drives us on. George F. Kolbe & David F. Very good or better. $900 The first copy of this highly important work we have offered in many years. It comprises the first volume of the history of the Académie Royale des Inscriptions et Belles-Lettres, and includes substantial numismatic content (subsequent vol- umes were occasionally published thereafter). The Academy was founded in 1663 by Jean-Baptiste Colbert. Often referred to as the “petite Académy,” this small group was responsible for advising on matters of iconography and the proper use of Latin on monuments, memorials and, notably, medals. The Academy went through several names and permutations in its early years, and played a very sig- nificant role in the project to commemorate the important events in the reign of Louis XIV in a series of what turned out to be over 300 medals. In 1702, they were responsible for the publication of the folio work printed to accompany the medallic project, the massive Médailles sur les principaux événements du règne de Louis le Grand. This volume, one of the most important numismatic books ever printed, was a masterpiece of statesmanship and the printing arts, as well as a monumental work of state propaganda. From the beginning, the medallic project and its accompanying text were intended not simply to be a record of events, but a carefully constructed history of the Sun King’s reign. The present work traces the history of the Academy, in its own words, from informal foun- dations to its development into an august institution: the Académie Royale des Inscriptions et Médailles, later known as the Académie Royale des Inscriptions et Belles-Lettres. In addition to their involvement in the production of Louis XIV’s own medals, the study of numismatics came under the Academy’s purview. In the present work, numismatic content begins on page 219 (“Reflexions sur les médai- lles d’Athènes”) and continues through page 286 (“Sur quelques autres monnoyes ou médailles modernes singulieres”), with much of more peripheral numismatic interest throughout. The coin plates depict coins attributed to Athens, Sparta and Crotone, as well as other Greek and Roman coins. A later plate depicts several medieval and early modern coins and medals. This is a beautifully produced book and an important work of history, with much to commend it. Apparently unlisted in the numismatic bibliographic literature, though it clearly deserves mention.
