An unimproveable, fine copy. (250.00) A rare edition of this work, in exceptional condition and very handsomely bound. A defense of numismatics written in the form of a discourse between Cynthio, Eugenius and Philander, followed by three series of woodcut plates of Roman coins, and preceded by Alex¬ ander Popes “Verses Occasion’d by Mr. Addisons Treatise of Medals.” Addison was one of the most important English essayists, and was, through The Spectator (which he published with Richard Steele), one of the guardians of good taste at the time. His opinions on the merits of coin collecting mattered. This volume also includes Addisons “The Present State of the War” and “Of the Christian Religion.” Hirsch 2 (citing the 1726 edition). Lipsius 4 (citing the 1726 edition). 2 Adler, Jacob George Christian. MUSEUM CUFICUM BORGIANUM VELITRIS. (500.00) The rare catalogue of the collection formed by Johann Heinrich Schulze (1687-1744), which primarily focused on ancient Greek and Roman Republican coins. Included throughout the volume are numerous manuscript additions, carefully bound in affixed to tabs. Manuscript materials present include: an unsigned two-page handwritten letter stating that Mr. Astle, in his learned account of the of the Seals of Kings.. .has, from want of proper Information, given, pages 20 and 21, a very erroneous Statement of the Chiefship of the Bruces,” and explaining the error made concerning this important Scottish family. A manuscript list of plates wanting from the Anderson volume is bound in, as are two different handwritten Tables of Contents, written in differ¬ ent hands. A hand-tinted engraved title page follows the engraved Anderson title, reading “Chart* et Sigilla Regum, Comitum et Procerum Scotiae.” Various notes pertaining to the subjects covered are bound in, as are a variety of engraved depictions of seals and additional charters, one of them folding. Two leaves on which are pasted individual contemporary handwritten slips comprising a plate index to members of the Scottish aris¬ tocracy are also bound in. Large folio [51 by 35 cm], contemporary brown half morocco with marbled boards; spine with five raised bands, lettered in gilt. Stamp of the Astle Library on front pastedown. Rebacked, with original spine laid on. A remarkable, fine volume. (2000.00) ' illy puzzling, volume, apparently compiled by Thomas Astle, the author of the second work bound within. Astle ( 1,3r>- 1803) was an exper t in paleography, one of the subjects covered in this volume in some depth. He was also an authority on Scottish seals. 1 his imposing yet uonderful volume brings together a number of subjects close to Astle’s heart, and supplements the ne engraxings within with innumerable personal additions in the form of handwritten notes, engraved depictions of seals and scripts tom other sources, letters, and so forth. The two-page letter bound into the opening pages of the volume, correcting an error he had apparently made regarding the Bruces, attests to his scholarly humility: the unsigned writer lays out a careful case arguing that Astle had been in error; Astle replies in his own hand at the bottom of the letter, giving the source he had used to make his printed statements and acknowledging that the source was incorrect and that the letter writer is, in fact, correct.
