Theycling totheirfathers'hands andcrywhentheysee thegrinningpumpkins. Whenthestreetlightsblinkon,suddenly, likehunger-thinnedCyclopssnappingopen yelloweyes, I knowtheolderoneswillcome. amprepared. I Nextto mychairI havestacked twelveapples. Thelightfrommyporch glintsofftheirbeautifultautskins. Tonight itisbeginningto rain, andthe rumbleofwheelsinthestreet willsoonsliptoahiss, but I knowacolddrenchingwon'tstopthechildren. Theyarehardierthan mailmen. Icaressmytovelyapples, tartandfirm,thekind mydaughterwould haverelished. I narrowmyeyesatmyreflection inthewindow, pullupasmile. Inthe harshyellowlightmyfaceisashadow andmynecklacesandteethgleam. Iamselective. I hadmybell removedyearsago; I hateditsinsipidchirp, like thehighpratterofachild. Ipreferthemtoknock, perhapsbruisetheirknuckles. MostofthemI sendawayunanswered, chucklingatthepoortrudgingbacks, thedisappointedhands. Iknowsomeoftheunchosenseeme inmyhardchairbetweenthecurtain, andthesearetheoneswhowillreturn 8
