Leslie Shear and Homer A. Thompson. Many of these vases and fragments have already appeared in various excavation reports or in special studies. In this volume, however, all of them are presented together for the first time in order to give as full a record as possible of this richly varied material. We wish to thank most Homer A. Thompson for the opportunityt o publish these vases and no less for his unfailing support of the project and his interest in it. We rememberg ratefully the late Lucy Talcott for all kinds of invaluable advice and help as well as for establishingt he Agora system of record keeping, which enabled us to retrieve informations o easily. Our special debt to the work of Sir John Beazley and our dependence upon it during all phases of our collaborationw ill be apparent throughout the entire volume. We invited Dietrich von Bothmer to tollaborate with us. He read the manuscript and offered numerous helpful suggestions for improvementa nd changes that saved us from many errors. Dur- ing her three-term leave from Hunter College in New York, he gave MBM the use of an office in the Greek and Roman Department at the Metropolitan Museum of Art as well as access to his photographica rchive, personal notes on vases, departmentb ooks and offprints. These ideal work- ing conditions enabled the research to proceed with much greater speed than would have been possible otherwise, and the special material made available has greatly enrichedt he contentso f this volume. We wish to express special thanks and gratitude to the staff of the Agora excavations for its friendly and cheerful cooperationd uring all phases of this study:T . Leslie Shear, Jr., Field Direc- tor; John McK. Camp II, Assistant Field Director; Lucy Krystallis and Helen Townsend who, as successive secretaries, coped uncomplainingly with our requests and questions; William B. Dins- moor, Jr., for the plan indicating the deposits; Alison Frantz for the majority of photographs; Robert K. Vincent, Jr. for much of the new photography;N icholas Restakis and Kyriake Moustaki for their care in printing the photographs;a nd Stephen Koob for restorationw ork. We also thank the following colleagues and friends for various kinds of help and support: Peter H. von Blanckenhagen, Andrew Clark, Poly Demolini, Charles Edwards, Evelyn B. Harrison, Caroline Houser, Henry Immerwahr, David Jordan, Phyllis Williams Lehmann, Mary Aiken Littauer, Joan R. Mertens, Martin Robertson, Gerhard Schmidt, Evelyn Lord Smithson, Eugene Vanderpool, and Marjorie Venit. During the time we shared the work on this volume, we were separated by a considerableg eo- graphic distance. It was, therefore, necessary to divide our labors in a manner that would not impede our progress. MZP wrote a preliminary description of all the entries. These were then rewritten to conform to the format we had decided upon, and for some the content was revised. Most descriptions are basically hers. She set up a picture file, made a detailed check list (typed in duplicate and meticulously checked by Ann Brownlee), and gathered and organized the deposit viii FOREWORD informationf rom the excavation records.M BM is primarily responsiblef or the comparandai n the Catalogue, the discussiono f all the shapes, the chaptero n pottersa nd painters,t he concordancea nd indexes, aanndd, t o large extent, for the selection of vases to be illustrated as well as for the layout of the plates. The profile drawings are by Helen Townsend; the other drawings are by MBM. During the three years that MBM worked on the project, she was the fortunate recipient of financial support from the following sources: a stipend from the American School of Classical Studies, October to December, 1978; an NEH Fellowship for 1979; two summer grants, one from the American Philosophical Society, the other from the Faculty Research Award Program of the City University of New York. During the summers 1977 and 1980, she enjoyedt he hospitality and facilities of the American School of Classical Studies and wishes to thank its staff for helping to make her visits to Athens both comfortablea nd productive. MZP wishes to thank the Agora for fellowships granted in 1957/1958 and in 1966/1967.
