V. Fedorenko (1910-1972) Nikolai Vasilievich Fedorenko, a member of the Organizing Committee for this Third International Conference on Atomic Physics, passed away in Leningrad on February 2, 1972. A distinguished physicist, well known for his pioneering work in heavy particle collisions, Fedorenko was also a leader on behalf of international cooperation in science. His participation on the Organizing Committee for this conference was but one of many similar roles he has filled in connection with international conferences and organizations over a period of more than a decade. He is remembered, as well, as a kind and gentle man, quietly dedicated, who shared a fundamental optimism about the future of society and the contribution that we in this field of science might make toward that future.
