We do not know the name of his wife, and can only assume that she died before he and his sons sailed for Virginia. Children of Matthew Atkinson are: + 2 i. Notes for Thomas Atkinson: Immigrant 1635 "13 July 1635, These underwritten names are to be transported to Virginia, embarked in ALICE, Richard Orchard, Mr. the men have taken oaths of allegiance and supremacies, includes. Notes for Mary —: Rolison, op. cit. is the first source to list her maiden name as ATKINSON but from the documents above we know that she was first married to an Atkinson, then to Thomas Gwaltney. and third was married to Thomas Pitman. Surry Court Records, op. cit. "Book 1, page 281 4 Cot. 1666. Conditions agreed upon between Capt. Thos. Pitman and Mrs. Mary Gualtney, before marriage. Thos. Pitman gives bond that the Widdowe Gaultney after marriage with him, shall have the whole disposal of a horse and mare which she now has to dispose of at her own pleasure, as also two pewter dishes and cattle, now called Atkinson Connections in Virginia and known to be for the two youngest children, also her youngest son, Wm. Notes for Alice Flake: Surry County VA Deeds, Book 5, 1 July 1696...Robert Flacke Sr. gives to William Gwaltney and John Gwaltney, two sons of William Gwaltney of Surry County, by Alice Gwaltney, his wight... 450 acres which were patented in Isle of Wight Co but are now in Surry Co.. Should either Will or John die, the land is to go the next son of William Gwaltney and Alice or to their daughter Kathrine. Alice was a great grandaughter of Captain Thomas Warren, member of the Virginia House of Burgess and builder of the Rolfe-Warren House in Surry Co., VA. [This is said to be the oldest brick house in Virgina.
