ISBN-13: 978-1-934586-37-2 A N D N & C OTE ON IVINE AMES APITALIZATION In this book we have employed Qabalistic (i.e., Hebrew) Divine and Archangelic names, but for readers who prefer other pantheons we have included lists of some alternative names in Appendix 5. We use the Qabalistic Divine Names partly because of our Golden Dawn tradition, but there is another reason. While the Qabalistic God Names may sound paternal in nature, i.e., “God” and “Lord,” they are in fact ultimately combinations of certain Hebrew letters, which when combined, form an idea or a concept that illustrates the nature of the Element, Planet or Sign. However, the scope of this book does not give us the opportunity to teach much about the nature of the Hebrew letters, or explain how their combinations work. If the reader is interested in this type of study, Greer 1996 is a good source. Readers will also see that words like Temple, Element, Sign, and Planet are often capitalized. We have tried to follow a rule of capitalizing certain words when they are used in a specifically ritual context, especially with the idea of a Divine being operating through that planet. Thus we use “planet” when discussing astrological elections, but we “Planet” when speaking of the objects of a particular ritual. A CKNOWLEDGEMENTS We would like to thank the following friends and colleagues, in alphabetical order: Chic and S. Tabatha Cicero, Matt McDonough, and Ian Phanes. We would also like to recognize and thank other important teachers and influences on our work and how we think about ritual: Adam and Isidora Forrest, Melita Dennings and Osborne Philips, Dion Fortune, John Michael Greer, Donald Michael Kraig, Colonel Charles Seymour, and the founders of the original Order of the Golden Dawn. Also available at www.bendykes.com: Choices & Inceptions: Traditional Electional Astrology translates numerous classical texts from Latin sources: Sahl, al-Rijāl, al-‘Imrānī, and others. It contains an extensive introduction and commentary on the theory of elections, including moral questions about undertaking them. Designed for curious modern astrology students, Traditional Astrology for Today explains basic ideas in history, philosophy and counseling, dignities, chart interpretation, and predictive techniques. Non-technical and friendly for modern beginners. Two classic introductions to astrology, by Abū Ma’shar and al-Qabīsī, are translated with commentary in this volume. Introductions to Traditional Astrology is an essential reference work for traditional students. The classic medieval text by Guido Bonatti, the Book of Astronomy is now available in paperback reprints. This famous work is a complete guide to basic principles, horary, elections, mundane, and natal astrology. The famous medieval horary compilation The Book of the Nine Judges is now available in translation for the first time! It is the largest traditional horary work available, and the third in the horary series. The Search of the Heart is the first in the horary series, and focuses on the use of victors (special significators or almutens) and the practice of thought-interpretation: divining thoughts and predicting outcomes before the client speaks. The Forty Chapters is a famous and influential horary work by al-Kindī, and is the second volume of the horary series. Beginning with a general introduction to astrology, al-Kindī covers topics such as war, wealth, travel, pregnancy, marriage, and more. The first volume of the Persian Nativities series on natal astrology contains The Book of Aristotle, an advanced work on nativities and prediction by Māshā’allāh, and a beginner-level work by his student Abū ‘Ali al-Khayyāt, On the Judgments of Nativities. The second volume of Persian Nativities features a shorter, beginner-level work on nativities and prediction by ‘Umar al-Tabarī, and a much longer book on nativities by his younger follower, Abū Bakr. The third volume of Persian Nativities is a translation of Abū Ma’shar’s work on solar revolutions, devoted solely to the Persian annual predictive system.
