The breadth of se- Assisted Living nior service options and resources continues to expand before our very eyes due largely to baby boomers entering and approaching their ‘retirement years.’ Although ‘retirement years’ is facing redefi nition on many fronts, it is well known that the senior population is not only in fl ux but living longer due to modern science. Hence, both community and business respond to trend. As detailed in the 2012–2013 Senior Housing Directory, many services are available for seniors regarding both senior specifi c topics (i.e. funeral pre-planning, senior volunteer opportunities, etc.) and basic needs includ- ing health care, nutrition and housing support. Beyond these more obvious services, new ideas inspired by activities that bring joy to individuals are also responsible for the breadth of senior services mentioned above. This year, our cover photo captures a live music therapy session. The substantial affects of this art, when used as a therapy, includes not only its feel good entertainment component but a healing component that deserves our atten- tion. Art therapy, which includes various disciplines such as music, visual art and dance, is unique because it incorporates a person’s talent, interest or joy and simultaneously addresses cognitive, physical and emotional needs. Please read our music therapy article found at page 16. A special thanks to our advertisers whose support and dedication allows for our continued service to our community.
