Most of the texts are dialogs between people meeting in the street, in cafés, at work, at home... Even complete beginners will be able to make themselves understood and to understand a conversation in the course of a few months. The Assimil method relies on daily involvement by the student. You will learn German by listening and repeating the sentences and, finally, speaking yourself. The most important rule is: do a little every day. It is only through constant contact that one’s natural powers of learning are exploited to the full. Even if you devote only ten to fifteen minutes each day to the course, do so every day, and do it when you are relaxed. During the first part of the process, the First Wave (Lesson 1-50), we only ask you to listen, repeat and understand. Read the texts aloud and compare them with the translation and notes. Do not pay too much attention to grammar rules. As you proceed, you will gradually assi- milate the basic constructions of the language in the same way as you assimilated your native language. Don’t learn anything by heart. From Lesson 50 onwards — the Second Wave and active phase of the Assimil method commences — you will go back to an earlier lesson, starting at Lesson |, and translate from English into German. At both stages, the exercices will help you to consolidate your know- ledge. The more complex points of grammar are examined every seventh les- son (Wiederholung und Erklarungen). In the texts, such points are indicated by [N-] and a number. Each time you come across one of these references, read the relevant Note but no more. In this way, when you reach the “Wiederholung und Erklérungen Lektion”, it will be a real review. Do not try and do too much at once. We have tried to make things as simple as possible, so find your own rhythm, and you will enjoy daily practice, ° VII Pronunciation The only way to acquire correct pronunciation is to listen to the recor- dings. However, to make things easier in the earlier lessons, we provide German pronunciation using the nearest equivalent English phonetic transcription and not the International Phonetic Alphabet. In German the pronunciation is not too difficult because you pronounce each letter. However, pay attention of the following points : The Umlaut, 4, 6, i: 4 is pronounced like “ai” in fair ; 6 is pronounced like “er” in her ; For the Umlaut ti, there is no equivalent sound in English. For those who know a little French, it corresponds to the pronunciation of the vowel “u” in French. Listen carefully to the recordings and repeat aloud ; this will be the best way of getting familiar with it. VIll + The ch is pronounced in two ways : Preceded by the vowels i, e, ti, eu foy], it is pronounced slightly less gutturally than “ch” in the Scottish word loch. We will write it this way in the pronunciation /¢h]. Preceded by the vowels a, 0, au, it is pronounced gutturally. It will be written with a capital H [cH]. The letter B is used instead of ss at the end of a word or before conso- nants. The “e” underlined is pronounced like the “e” in open. Please note that the stress is on the bold-faced letters. These indications will be sufficient for the time being. Remember that nobody speaks a language without making mistakes at first... Viel Spass! Enjoy yourself! ° TX 1 Erste Lektion [erste lektsionn] Im Cafe 1— Herr Ober! 2 Der Tee © ist kalt! 3— Wie © ist der Tee? 4— Er 3st kalt! 5 — Oh, Verzeihung! This sound occurs after the vowels a, 0, u, au. In the pro- nunciation key the guttural ch will be written with a capital h cH.
