Mitchell, MD, is currently the NRI/Lee A. Christofferson MD Professor and Chair of the Department of Clinical Neuroscience at theUniversityofNorthDakotaSchoolofMedicineandHealthSciences and President and Scientific Director of the Neuropsychiatric Research Institute.Dr.MitchellcompletedhisundergraduateeducationatIndiana University and medical school at Northwestern University. Since enter- ing academics he has focused primarily on research in the areas of eating disorders and obesity. Carol B. Peterson, PhD, received her doctorate in clinical psy- chology from the University of Minnesota. She is currently a research associate in the Eating Disorders Research Program at the University of Minnesota, where her investigations have focused on the assessment, diagnosis,andtreatmentofbulimianervosa,anorexianervosa,bingeeat- ingdisorder,andobesity.Dr.Petersonhasauthoredmorethan45articles and book chapters and has served as an investigator on several federally funded research projects focusing on eating disorders. While much of what is in- cluded in this text is evidence based, we have attempted to present this informationinsuchawaythatitwillbehelpfulforresearchers,students, and practicing clinicians. The first two chapters of this book include diagnostic and classifica- tion issues. B. Timothy Walsh (Chapter 1, with Dana A. Satir) chaired the DSM-IV workgroup on eating disorders and has been a leader in the field on the topic of diagnostic issues as the criteria have evolved. Chap- ter 2, by Kathryn H. Gordon, Jill M. Denoma, and Thomas E. Joiner, Jr., focuses more on issues of scientific validity. Chapter3,byCarolB.Peterson,describesindepththeprocessofdi- agnostic interviewing. The diagnostic interview of a patient with an eat- ing disorder requires a thorough assessment of many factors that are not typicallyincludedinastandardpsychiatricinterview.InChapter4,James E.Mitchellfocusesonprovidingadatabasethatcanbeusedbyclinicians as a way of obtaining additional information about patients. Chapter 5, by Carlos M. Grilo, and Chapter 6, by Carol B. Peterson and James E. Mitchell, discuss structured, semistructured, and self-report measures.
