I dedicate this book to him. 8 Foreword PeoplewithAsperger’sSyndrome(AS)havethesamesexualinterests,issuesand diversity as occur in the general population. However, adolescents and adults with AS are differentinterms of the abilityto ‘read’ and understand the subtle andcomplexthoughtsandemotionsof anotherpersonandtoeffectivelycom- municate their own inner thoughts and feelings. There are also differences in sensoryperception,previousrelationshipexperiencesandtheunderstandingof social conventions. These differences are obviously going to have a significant impact on the development of sexuality for the person with AS. While we are graduallyincreasingourknowledgebaseandexpertiseonAS,thereisaseparate andextensiveknowledgebaseandexpertiseonsexualityinthegeneralpopula- tion. What has been missing is someone with qualifications and clinical expertiseinbothareastocombineanunderstandingofASandsexualityandto write the seminal book on sexual education and intervention programmes. Isabelle Hénault has now written that book. Theauthorfirstprovidesfactualinformationonthephysiologicalandpsy- chological changes associated with puberty, the development of intimate rela- tionships and the range of human sexuality that is relevant to adolescents and adultswithAS.PeoplewithASenjoyincreasingtheirknowledgeandacquiring andrememberingfacts,buttheareaofsexualityismorethanacollectionoffacts anddata.Thereareissuesofself-perceptionandself-esteem,attitudesandpreju- dices, past experiences, empathy and intimacy.
