Messages
On behalf of Artscape, it is my honour and privilege to present the
Artscape Education and Training Programme Diary 2018. Th e annual
diary highlights the education, training and audience development
programmes and co-productions which will take place at Artscape
during 2018 demonstrating our dedication towards investment in the
future of the Arts in South Africa.
Artscape executes its mandate according to the following values
1. Inclusivity
Inclusivity plays an important role in uniting a nation. At Artscape, we use the performing arts
as the vehicle. Th e diversity of programmes and co-productions staged in conjunction with our
collaborative institutions and partners locally, regionally and internationally provides clear evidence
of our commitment to cultivating a diverse and inclusive arts environment for the community that
we serve.
2. People Centred
A performing arts centre cannot exist without the existence of its stakeholders, both internal and
external. At Artscape we acknowledge and appreciate the support we receive from our Audiences,
Funding Partners and all other Stakeholders whom have journeyed with us since Artscape’s
existence, and no part of what we are mandated to deliver on would be possible without our valued
and dedicated staff who create the magic behind the scenes.
3. Excellence
Creating a culture of excellence is critical to the growth and sustainability of our organisation. To
achieve this excellence, Artscape continuously monitors the quality of the productions that grace
our stages, thereby creating a culture that ensures our development and educational programmes
are masterpieces that will leave our audiences mesmerized in all genres of the performing arts.
4. Innovation
At Artscape, we are constantly striving to be the leading innovative performing arts theatre globally.
Which is why we invest in partnerships locally, regionally and abroad, focusing in all art forms. Th is
is to adopt world class benchmarking standards that can be innovatively adopted using our African
themes. Our education, development and mentoring programmes are geared towards equipping all
who benefi t from them with cutting edge skills required to deliver exceptional performances.

Lastly, Artscape’s exemplary mission to promote social cohesion, contribute to nation-building and
global solidarity through the pursuit of excellence in the performing arts will continue during the
year 2018 through the programmes and productions presented in this diary.
On behalf of my fellow esteemed Council Members, we sincerely thank you for joining us this year as
we continue striving to achieving our vision and mission to be one of the world’s leading centres for
performing arts and creative excellence. I look forward to collaborating with all our stakeholders in
2018 in creating magical experiences for your enjoyment and education!

Artscape Th eatre Centre continues to deliver on our mandate by
presenting quality education and outreach programmes with the
youth as our target market. Th is lays fundamental stepping-stones
for our people and brings us closer to the ideals of being a socially
cohesive nation. On a local government level we have a proud
12-year partnership with municipalities across the province.
Each year we reach more than 3500 learners through our annual
rural outreach programme. Artscape is in partnership with Th e City of Cape Town and Provincial
Government of the Western Cape in all spheres. We are governed by the National Department of
Arts and Culture and our building is owned and maintained by the Province.Th ese partnerships
enhance our mandate and we synergise for collective good.
In 2018 Artscape looks forward to creating shared and safe spaces with all our partners at Artscape
and together we can celebrate our Creative and Cultural Centre!

ARTSCAPE Education and Training Programme 2018
Th rough theatre and visual art, Artscape Th eatre Centre in the
ppaasstt yyeeaarrss hhaass mmaasstteerreedd tthhee aarrtt ooff bbrriinnggiinngg ttooggeetthheerr aallll tthhee ppeeooppllee
of South Africa, with particular development of those rooted
in the Western Cape. Th eatre manages to shift mind-sets, build
confi dence and bring forth a sense of inclusiveness as a result
of its interactive nature. We know it is part of human nature to
feel the need to examine who we are in relation to where we
are, consequently, basic elements of theatre and drama exist
in every society and what better tool than to communicate
through dramatic arts. Th e Centre strongly believes in Youth
development, Education and Development in general and as a result the programmes
stretch out as far as the rural communities bringing enjoyment to those who would not otherwise
experience theatre. We have the opportunity to bring life to community theatre dreams, to give
youth a chance to perform on a professional stage and to educate hundreds of learners through
Set Work productions. We open our doors to all members of the public to provide a world-class
experience in our building while watching a professional theatre production.
We are confi dent that 2018 will be a productive year!

The Cape Philharmonic Orchestra Debut Gala –
Cape Town
A variety of young emerging stars from different communities make their debut with the Cape Town
Philharmonic Orchestra (CPO). A celebration of song and dance with local stars including Paxton
Fellies, Craig Lucas, Kyle Shepherd, Heavenly Quartez, and David Kramer. From symphonic pop, jazz,
and rock to light classics, the CPO under the baton of Brandon Phillips, will take you on a musical
journey, showcasing the best talent in town.

SA International Ballet Competition
The preliminary rounds showcase talented dancers, from around the world and South Africa ranging in
age from 12 to 28, in classical and contemporary solos and will compete for medals and monetary prizes.

Western Cape Schools Festival
This annual festival exposes young learners to professioinal theatre and hands-on workshop. They
also engage with creative intellectuals in lectures and demonstrations.
The programme is presented by the Grahamstown Foundation and is by invitation only.

ARENA
12-16 MARCH
Teach One Teach All
Teach One Teach All is a 1½-hour theatre production comprising of three individual performances of
20 minutes each. Each of the 20-minute performances deals with specific topics and themes that are
relevant to the youth and adults. It is told in contemporary idiom that they can identify with viz.:
High on Life – a musical dance drama which deals with youth at risk through gangsterism and
drugs, using the current spoken word-trends interwoven with high concept dancing and acting.
A mother’s love – a drama that deals with sexual abuse, suicide, racial and religious tolerance at
school using modern technology such as cell phones, iPods, etc.
U bully – a physical theatre drama dealing with bullying at schools using current songs and
clothing.
