This was the title of a symposium held by the Byzantinische Archäologie Mainz (Byzantine Archaeology Mainz(cid:11) now Leibniz-WissenschaftsCampus Mainz: Byzanz zwischen Orient und Okzident(cid:8) in (cid:41)une (cid:17)(cid:15)(cid:16)(cid:15) in (cid:44)ain(cid:89)(cid:11) (cid:38)ermany. The author of this book(cid:11) (cid:35)r Anastassios Antonaras(cid:11) a leading scholar in his field working at the (cid:44)useum for (cid:33)y(cid:89)antine (cid:34)ulture in Thessaloniki(cid:11) ga(cid:85)e a paper with the title Artisanal Pro- duction in Byzantine Thessaloniki (4th–15th Centuries). He presented an impressive amount of evidence for workshops of all kinds in this (cid:33)y(cid:89)antine metropolis. The ephorates in charge of the conser(cid:85)ation of monuments and archaeological finds had collected much e(cid:85)idence that came to light during building works in the city(cid:11) which is preser(cid:85)ed in the archi(cid:85)es. (cid:35)r Antonaras compiled all the a(cid:85)ailable e(cid:85)idence and analysed it for the symposium. Afterwards(cid:11) he said to me that he had ne(cid:85)er had to put so much effort into such a short paper and that his desk had been o(cid:85)erloaded with written records and files he had found during his research. (cid:40) immediately asked him whether this could be turned into a book that could provide a unique insight into the arts, crafts and trades in Byzantium, their spatial organisation and de(cid:85)elopment throughout the history of the city. (cid:39)e agreed and started working on the manuscript. This book is the result(cid:11) and it e(cid:87)ceeds e(cid:87)pectations: hundreds of archaeological finds from different areas and periods are gathered in a comprehensive catalogue that gives evidence of the city’s provision with artisanal products(cid:11) the craftsmen(cid:105)s (cid:80)uarters and important changes o(cid:85)er the centuries. Thessaloniki(cid:11) the second city in the (cid:33)y(cid:89)antine (cid:36)mpire with a long history from the (cid:39)ellenistic age until today(cid:11) pro(cid:85)ides a particularly good case study since this evidence is not available from the capital, Constantinople, itself. Thanks to the efficient ephorates o(cid:85)erseeing all e(cid:87)ca(cid:85)ations comprehensi(cid:85)ely(cid:11) this e(cid:85)idence is a(cid:85)ailable in the archives and published archaeological reports. The present (cid:85)olume would not ha(cid:85)e been possible without the thorough and attenti(cid:85)e work of the editors: Dr Antje Bosselmann-Ruickbie is an art historian and archaeologist specialising in Byzantine goldsmiths(cid:105) works; (cid:35)r (cid:43)eo Ruickbie(cid:11) a nati(cid:85)e (cid:36)nglish speaker(cid:11) is a sociologist and historian; and both have a comprehensive publishing and editing record. To them a cordial »thank you«. This also goes for all colleagues in and outside of the R(cid:188)misch(cid:12)(cid:38)ermanisches (cid:57)entralmuseum (cid:44)ain(cid:89) who ha(cid:85)e helped this book to see the light of the day. (cid:40) am confident that it is a long(cid:12)awaited contribution to research on (cid:33)y(cid:89)antine e(cid:85)eryday life and will be well(cid:12)recei(cid:85)ed in its field.
