Proto- planning types in minutes or hours? An engineered material that can survive rigorous testing in the field? Or would you like multiple or blended engineered materials contained in the same model? The “rapid” term in this environment lives on in the terms rapid manufacturing and rapid tooling. Rapid manufacturing denotes the process methodology of going from 3D CAD model to production part in rapid succession, while rapid tooling (RT) denotes the process of translating the model in software into a 3D mold that is constructed in same way as a physical RP part. Stock pieces of equipment from other suppliers wouldn’t allow for the added engineering we re- quired,” said Rossetti. “You can’t make a Volkswagen on a Ford production line.” Besides Rockwell PLCs providing pro- grammable zone heating control for differ- ent types of bread, IHB has benefited from the servo-actuated automatic loading of multiple loaves instead of individual hand- loading, solving the problem of finger in- dentations affecting the finished look of certain breads. As required, the loader can also flip loaves before they enter the oven. Casasanta noted that the stone elements on the oven’s internal conveyor, made in Italy to 0.25 mm tolerance, provide a ra- diant heat that emulates traditional ovens and creates a uniformly baked product. Energy efficiency is integral to Casasan- ta’s design. The air/gas combustion burn- ers on the top of the oven only supplement the heat provided from the bottom burn- ers, while a cross-flow convection effect is maintained via recirculation return ducts. Using SolidWorks mechanical CAD software (solidworks.com), Casasanta was able to model his entire new oven design before going into production. “I was able to perform interference detection, ensure all the bolt holes lined up and know the final oven design was completely accurate,” said Casasanta. FlowWorks from CosmosWorks analysis software allowed Casasanta to know what to expect from the heat circula- tion inside the oven, he added. When an SMSR is mounted directly onto a driven shaft with no other external support, it must have a torque arm attached to it. A torque arm is a pivoted connecting link between the reducer and a fixed anchor point intended to resist the torque developed by the reducer. Quite simply, a torque arm transmits the reaction torque produced by real power the SMSR into the structure of the machine, thereby preventing the counter-rotation of an SMSR during operation. Counter-rotation prevention the key consideration In considering the design of a torque arm, first you need to understand the amount of load (or force) that the torque arm may see during unit operation. To determine this force, you need two pieces of critical information: 1. The torque capacity of the SMSR: As the name implies, this is the mechanical capacity (typically expressed in terms in. lb or Nm) that the SMSR is capable of developing at its output. While it may be tempting to simply multiply the MOTOR output torque by the reducer’s reduction ratio to obtain an output torque value, it is recommended to consider (at a minimum) the larger of the following values: • the SMSR’s output torque capacity (as listed in the product catalog) or, • the product of the motor’s output torque and reduction ratio times an additional 2.5 – to take into account the motor’s starting torque. 2. The dimensional location on the SMSR where the torque arm will be mounted: Manufacturers of shaft mounted speed reducers provide at least one mounting location for a torque arm. Note that the point where the torque arm attaches to the reducer (either directly or indirectly through a bracket) is known as the pivot point. Many manufacturers provide more than one potential location for the torque IF YOU’RE NO SANDCASTLE SCULPTOR, USE SOLIDWORKS. arm in order to accommodate the various mounting configurations available for a given product. Untitled-2 1 1/2/08 9:54:08 AM 10 Design Product News dpncanada.com March/April 2008 Feature: Power Transmission Linear guide primer asks designers: ”round or square?” By Robert Lipsett Square rails are available with preloads that can be specified from light (3% of Load capacity for a similar the rated dynamic load) to heavy (13% size square rail linear guide Design engineers considering linear of the rated dynamic load). The classic can be 3 or more times that of a round ball bushing guides often struggle with which application for profile rail bearings is in when both are taken at a basic shape to choose: round or the machine tool industry where load 100 km travel life. round square. Because the shaft is round, ball bushings are free to rotate in roll around their axis. This allows one rail to be installed at a slightly different elevation than the other, with height differences of 1 or 2 mm often being acceptable when rails are installed 300 mm or more apart. Also, most ball bushings enable each linear bearing to rotate up to ½ a degree in pitch and yaw to accommodate flatness or alignment errors. Another significant benefit of round rail products is their circular profile, which allows the shaft to be end supported. This enables round linear bearing designs to span gaps of 12 to 24x the shaft diameter. The square rail solution to the prob- lem of alignment is to simply use one rail. Because they can support move- ments in all directions, profile rail bear- ings do not need to be used in rail pairs or even bearing pairs. For light loads, a Alignment with the drive mechanism must still be accounted for single profile rail bearing can provide the desired guidance (note that not all profile rail products are designed for this type of operation), which eliminates the problem of aligning two rails on divergent sur- faces. However, alignment with the drive mechanism must still be accounted for, and profile rails are not designed to span gaps or be end supported. Design flexibility can be an important consideration in the choice of components. To achieve optimum performance, com- ponents are often modified to enhance function or fit the available space. Profile rail bearings are more compact than round ball bushing bearings when load ratings are compared. So if the geometry supports the system needs, you will have a fairly optimized package. However, if modifica- tions are necessary, it is generally easier to make those on a round rail system. In some applications smoothness is a major consideration. Although specif- ics can vary between components and applications, ball bushing bearings tend to operate very smoothly and typically run with slight clearance or light preload of 1 to 2% of the rated dynamic load, which also promotes smooth operation. One last consideration for round rail installations is that one can also run non- ball type polymer bushings on the shafts.
