Negative Theology and Modern French Philosophy Arthur Bradley Routledge Studies in Religion Negative Theology and Modern French Philosophy Negative theology is a premodern theological discourse but the questions it poses about the relationship between the known and unknown, the finite and the infinite and the immanent and the transcendent echo throughout secular postmodern philosophy. The philosopher Jacques Derrida speaks of a deeply ambiguous desire to 'save the name' of God in his work on negative theology, and this desire resonates in different ways in the work of his contemporaries. This turn to religion within the work of a group of thinkers who have been stereo typically identified as relativists or nihilists prompts a series of questions which form the backdrop to this study: • Who precisely do Derrida and his contemporaries want to 'save the name' of negative theology for and/ or from? • What exactly is the relationship between their -often so very different -readings of the negative way? • Why does this comparatively obscure Christian tradition remain a significant resource for a group of thinkers who range from commit ted believers to agnostics or atheists? Negative Theology and Modern French Philosophy advances a reading of negat ive theology as an ancient name for something that is essential not simply to modern French thought but to all responsible thought and action what soever. It will be essential reading for theologians and philosophers and will also interest those concerned with the work of Derrida and his contemporaries. Arthur Bradley is a lecturer in the Department of English at University College Chester. He has published on religion and nineteenth- and twentieth-century philosophy, particularly romanticism, phenomenology, genealogy and deconstruction.
