Barbara Stokes and Antoine Helewa Preface Writingaself-helpbookforindividualswitharthritisisachal- lenging endeavor. When we decided to write this book, we knewthatmanyotherbookshadbeenwrittencoveringoneaspect or another of arthritis care. But we felt there was still no single comprehensive book that focused on the incredibly complex vari- ety of physical and psychosocial problems facing arthritis sufferers while also presenting scientifically sound, practical advice that would provide a measure of relief from these problems. So we set out to write a book with a simple goal in mind—to help people addressthedailychallengesthatindividualswitharthritisfaceand offer them solutions that are achievable and self-directed and that can result in a vastly improved quality of life. In addition to its comprehensive coverage of a wide range of simple and practical treatment choices, our book is unique in that it presents the scientific evidence to support these treatments. In recent years we have seen a marked growth in all fields of arthritis research resulting in scientifically-proven fresh approaches to dis- ease assessment, diagnosis, and treatment. In this book we do our best to explain, in everyday language, what these scientific achievements are and how they can benefit individuals with arthritis. We believe that presenting the scientific basis for treat- ment options equips people to make the best informed choices about their own arthritis care. vii viii PREFACE What We Cover The word “arthritis” has become a generic term covering the 100 different forms of disease that primarily affect joints and their related structures. Many of these distinct disease entities share commonsymptomsandmethodsoftreatment.Becauseofthis,we focus on those diseases that are most common and share symp- toms and treatment approaches rather than cover each disease entity separately. For example, rheumatoid arthritis, a common and debilitating form of arthritis, shares characteristics and treatment approaches with juvenile chronic arthritis, psoriatic arthritis and sys- temic lupus erythematosis. Since the similarities among some dis- eases are greater than the disparities, we have grouped related forms of arthritis together. We hope that this will make the book equally useful to people with a wide array of diagnoses. Our Organization This book is divided into two parts. Part 1 explains what arthritis is, discusses its impact on the individual (and society); describes how human joints do their job; lists the common forms of arthri- tis; and provides information about community resources for indi- viduals with arthritis. Other chapters in Part 1 cover scientific research (and how it informs treatment choices); detail the impor- tance of arthritis medications in controlling the disease process; and address the issues of arthritis pain management, wellness, and disability prevention with a special emphasis on the great impor- tance of physical exercise in arthritis treatment. Part 2 of the book offers specific advice on how individuals can self-manage their arthritis. The first three chapters cover exercise, building on the foundation established in Part 1.
