PREFACE I want to dedicate this book to my stunning, thoughtful, compassionate, loving, lifelong partner and wife, Pam. Also, to Wendy our beautiful, intelligent, benevolent daughter who through her natural health teachings and influence has changed my life for the better. About the Author My name is Walt Merrill, born and raised in the USA. I’m not a doctor or associated in any way with the medical community, just an individual who contracted the dreaded disease - ARTHRITIS! I’m not an author, but wanted to help my fellow human beings by telling my unadulterated story of HOW I CONQUERED IT! If I can assist only one person in helping them conquer the horrible pain of arthritis, I will be very happy, and feel my story has assisted where the medical establishment has failed. I hope you will enjoy and benefit from this. BEST OF HEALTH!! My sole purpose for writing this book is my burning desire to help people. Over 350 million people in the world, of which nearly 70 million reside in the USA, suffer from this debilitating, devastating, and disabling disease. To make matters worse, the medical community states that arthritis is a disease that has NO “KNOWN” CURE! They have no cure for 350,000,000 people? Their only answer is to take aspirin, pain killers and shots to help with the excruciating pain. If you can’t stand the pain, they will suggest a major joint replacement. One medical doctor once told me, when your pain gets so bad you can’t stand it, come see me and I will perform knee arthroplasty (replacement)! I find this utterly ridiculous and certainly no answer for the millions suffering! I am telling my honest story hoping that at least one, perhaps many more sufferers of ARTHRITIS, will be able to get the same relief I have finally found. Do you feel ... Fatigued, worn out, aching joints, depressed, irritable, listless, lack of energy, always tired, no ambition, lack of appetite, not interested in going places and doing things, overall lack of desire, unexpected weight loss, basic don’t give a s##t feeling and attitude? If this describes you or a family member, friend or acquaintance, you may be excited and thrilled to read my personal true story! CHAPTER 1 — MY STORY — I am not a doctor nor do I have any connection to the medical establishment whatsoever. I am an American citi-zen who over time developed arthritis and was determined to improve my health naturally and without drugs and surgery! — MY EARLY DAYS — As a young man, I grew up in a small town in New Hampshire, did everything that young people enjoyed in those “good old days.” I played baseball, football, golf, bowling. I ice skated, skied, enjoyed swimming, etc. After high school graduation, I attended Boston University and graduated with a Bachelor of Science in Business Administration along with a US Army commission as a Second Lieutenant. The next few years were dedicated to serving in the United States Military. In various capacities and commands from Indiana, Georgia, Texas, South Carolina, New York to Massachusetts, completing my active duty as a 1st Lieutenant / Commanding Officer of a STRAC ARMY Unit. After military service, my wife and I settled in Massachusetts close to our families. I began my business management career, and started a family. Like most people my age, we purchased a home in the suburbs and commuted to our jobs. Long hours at work, commuting back and forth, spending time with the family, and upkeep of our home kept us busy. In time we had the opportunity to relocate back to New Hampshire where we built our home in the southern part of the state. Over the years I had management positions in several fields - electronics, military hardware, consumer products, computers, hospitality. We founded, owned and operated a very successful travel business and a hospitality consulting firm in southern New Hampshire for more than 10 years. — HOW IT ALL BEGAN — Fast forwarding to more current times, I returned to management in the retail sector in southern New Hampshire. This is most likely where my physical problems started and continued to develop into rheumatoid arthritis, probably due to many long days resulting in years walking on concrete floors. The aches and pains started very slowly, so slowly I did not even realize anything was wrong. A normal day for me was working in the retail industry and being on my feet all day. I assumed it was just a result of the daily grind, and since I was growing older I thought nothing of it. This condition continued to progress over time. At first, I was absolutely unaware that anything bad was beginning. I am not the type of guy to go to the doctor, unless it’s an accident or something life threatening. Therefore, you can imagine I was NOT going to see any doctor for anything as silly as this! As my knee began to really bother me, friends and acquaintances would occasionally ask if I was okay? “You seem to limp a little.” I answered “I’m fine. It’s nothing to worry about, but thanks for your concern.” As time went by, some days I would feel good and at other times, it would hurt a lot. Occasionally, I would take aspirin, when the pain was severe. Mostly, I thought it was a strain or muscle pull and that it would GO AWAY! But, although some days it didn’t bother me, it really never went away. Because of my dislike for medical doctors and old Yankee stubbornness, I wanted to heal myself. I began to read everything I could find about the pain I was experiencing (possibly arthritis): books, magazines, internet references. I found many extremely interesting ideas, thoughts, theories, studies, references, reports, investigations. — FRIENDLY ASSISTANCE — As the months went on, many friends and acquaintances in privacy would say, “I have a good friend who had a similar situation as yours and he had a procedure done on his knee in a local hospital and he recovered from the operation and is now doing well and has gained back all his mobility.” They would even give me the names and phone numbers of these friends and surgeons in case I wanted to ask any questions. People were always thoughtful and caring in their advice and helpfulness. I even have an electrical contractor friend who has done work for us over the years. He had his right knee replaced several years ago. His rehabilitation took longer than he was told due to an unexpected infection. Because of his type of work, which required kneeling down, he needed to bounce back as soon as possible. He was gracious enough to give me his surgeon’s name and telephone number. Other people, even some strangers would give me loads of information and their opinions about what I could do to repair my body. Some would tell me about old remedies they or their relatives have used for years (for example - raisins soaked in gin for a specific number of days and then eating a certain number per day). I have been told about dozens of remedies from many people trying to be of assistance in one way or another. A friend of a friend even told me of his buddy who is a golf pro in Florida. He had trouble with his left knee and was told by nearly every doctor in the state that he would need a total knee replacement to resolve his condition. He was determined not to have that total knee replacement and continued his research and investigation until he found a clinic on Florida’s West Coast that he felt was different! This clinic had developed a unique method of repairing joints. They used a partial artificial device to replace the damaged portion of the joint. Therefore, this would be considered minor surgery compared to total knee replacement (which is generally thought of as major surgery) and hopefully results in shorter recovery and physical therapy time. I even called this golf pro in Florida to hear his story. He explained to me the procedure and the benefits. He was sold on this method of knee repair. He was thrilled to be back on the golf course. He also gave me the clinic’s name and phone number. Even though many people told me of their successful operations, I also heard of numerous unfortunate surgeries. This includes things such as infections, hospital errors, doctors mistakes, wrong appliances, long physical therapy. All these horrific examples continued my skepticism and fear of major surgery. — MY FRIENDS’ SAGA — WE’LL CALL HIM “JOE” The most poignant example I have is one that involves one of my best friends. We have known Joe, his wife and their entire family for more than 35 years. He has worked hard all his life in the food industry. After some time he developed problems with his left knee and decided to see his family physician. Joe was told that he should see an orthopedic specialist. After many tests, blood work, x-rays, MRI’s, etc., he was told “you need a total left knee replacement”. As the time for surgery arrived (at a major Boston hospital), Joe was looking forward to being “back to normal” again soon. He had the operation and things seemed to have gone as planned. Joe was transferred to a rehabilitation facility. They kept him at the rehab facility for the “allotted” number of days, where he had physical therapy, blood work, + physician visits. Supposedly, he was making normal progress so as scheduled, he was allowed to go home. Arrangements were made for him to go to a rehabilitation facility as an outpatient for exercising and getting his knee back in shape. Joe also had periodic appointments with the doctors to check on progress. He expressed concern to a doctor that the inflammation of his knee had not gone down the way they predicted. His doctor inspected the left knee (that was replaced), and said he was not doing his physical therapy/exercise as instructed, even though Joe indicated he was following the rehab directions explicitly! Weeks went by, as he continued following the protocol, but the swelling remained. The doctor continued with his adamant attitude insisting that the only thing wrong was inadequate rehab and exercise! Months went along before Joe could convince the surgeon with the help of his wife (who, by the way, is a practicing RN) that something else was wrong! The doctor finally agreed to investigate further, and what do you suppose he discovered? That there was a major INFECTION in the knee area! They then
